Why Was Jesus Crucified? The Biblical Meaning 📖

Many people know that Jesus died on a cross, but why did it have to happen?

The Bible teaches that Jesus’ crucifixion was not an accident. It was part of God’s plan of salvation from the beginning.

According to Scripture:

✝️ Jesus died for our sins

“Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree…” — 1 Peter 2:24

✝️ Jesus took our place

“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities…” — Isaiah 53:5

✝️ His blood was shed for forgiveness

“For this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” — Matthew 26:28

✝️ Jesus reconciled us to God

“For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin…” — 2 Corinthians 5:21

✝️ He willingly laid down His life

“No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.” — John 10:18

✝️ He is the Lamb of God

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” — John 1:29

✝️ Through Him we receive eternal life

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

The crucifixion is central to the Gospel because through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God made a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him.

... Read moreReflecting on the crucifixion of Jesus offers profound insight into the nature of God’s love and redemption. From personal experience in studying Scripture, I’ve found that understanding why Jesus died helps deepen faith and provides hope. One powerful lesson is how Jesus willingly laid down His life, exemplified in John 10:18, where Jesus declares He gives His life voluntarily out of obedience to the Father. This act of surrender highlights not only sacrifice but also divine purpose—a plan set before the foundation of the world. It is humbling to realize that the crucifixion was not a tragic accident but a fulfillment of prophecy, such as Isaiah 53:5, where it says He was 'wounded for our transgressions.' The image of Jesus as the Lamb of God, taking away the sin of the world (John 1:29), resonates deeply. Every time I revisit Matthew 26:28, which speaks of His blood shed for the remission of sins, I’m reminded of the new covenant and the forgiveness that’s freely offered. In everyday life, this assurance transforms fear of guilt into peace. Moreover, reflecting on 2 Corinthians 5:21 about Jesus becoming sin for us enables a personal connection to the reconciliation offered to humanity. It invites us to step into a restored relationship with God, something I’ve experienced as a profound source of spiritual renewal. The crucifixion also offers victory over sin and death, as seen in Colossians 2:14-15, a fact that brings hope beyond the grave—an eternal life promised in Romans 6:23. This hope has encouraged me through difficult times, knowing Christ’s resurrection power can overcome any despair. Studying these truths in a visual format, like the storyboard approach used here, makes the deep theological concepts accessible and memorable. It helps to personally see and meditate on these key verses, bringing them to life beyond just words on a page. I encourage others to explore these passages themselves and experience the rich comfort and hope found in the biblical account of why Jesus was crucified.
