How To Read The Bible In Context

Have you ever read a Bible verse and wondered what it really means?

One of the biggest mistakes Christians make is reading a verse without understanding its context. This visual storyboard helps you learn how to study Scripture the way it was intended to be read by considering the surrounding verses, historical setting, audience, purpose, and the overall message of God’s Word.

📖 Inside this storyboard you’ll learn:

✨ What biblical context means

✨ Why context is essential for understanding Scripture

✨ A simple step-by-step study method

✨ Common mistakes to avoid

✨ Questions to ask while reading

✨ Helpful Bible study tools to use

This resource is perfect for:

📚 Personal Bible study

📚 Bible journaling

📚 New believers

📚 Homeschool Bible lessons

📚 Small group discussions

📚 Sunday school teachers

Key Scriptures featured include:

📖 2 Timothy 2:15

📖 Acts 17:11

📖 Psalm 119:160

📖 Luke 24:27

📖 John 20:30-31

📖 James 1:5

📖 Isaiah 8:20

📖 2 Peter 1:20-21

Understanding context protects us from false teachings, helps us rightly divide God’s Word, and allows us to apply Scripture accurately in our daily lives.

📚 This storyboard was created to help believers move beyond surface-level reading and develop confidence in studying the Bible faithfully and responsibly.

📚 Every Drawn By Scripture storyboard includes Bible references throughout the design so you can study directly from Scripture and verify every detail for yourself.

🤎 As always, these visual resources are not founded on my own understanding, opinions, or traditions. Every board is built directly from God’s Word, with Scripture references included throughout so that the Bible remains the authority and the proof.

📚 More Bible maps, timelines, genealogy boards, character studies, and visual Bible resources are available through the link in my bio.

... Read moreFrom my personal journey of studying the Bible, understanding context has been a game-changer in my faith walk. Initially, I used to read isolated verses that seemed to convey one meaning, but once I started exploring the verses immediately before and after, as well as the historical and cultural background, the true message unfolded more clearly. For example, taking 2 Timothy 2:15—"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth"—to heart encouraged me to approach Scripture with intentionality and care. One practical tip I’ve found invaluable is to always ask: Who was the original audience? What circumstances were influencing the author? This helped me grasp why Paul’s letters addressed certain issues the way they did. Using study Bibles with notes, concordances, and maps has enriched my understanding, ensuring I’m not reading Scripture with my own biases but uncovering God’s intended meaning. I also learned that ignoring context can lead to serious mistakes, as the visual storyboard highlights. False teachings often emerge when verses like 2 Peter 3:16 are twisted by removing them from their original setting. A disciplined approach—praying for wisdom, observing the text carefully, cross-referencing Scripture, and then applying it—has helped me avoid common pitfalls. Moreover, exploring key passages such as Luke 24:27 where Jesus explained the Scriptures to His disciples shows the power of context in revealing Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament promises. This deepened my own faith and understanding tremendously. In group studies or personal devotionals, focusing on these contextual questions promotes richer discussions and stronger spiritual growth. For anyone new to Bible study or seeking to deepen their relationship with God, investing time in learning how to read Scripture in context is a vital step. It transforms the Bible from a set of isolated sayings into a coherent narrative that guides, challenges, and inspires every aspect of life.
