How To Study The Old Testament Without Feeling Overwhelmed 📖

Many Christians spend most of their time in the New Testament and never fully understand the Old Testament.

But the Old Testament is the foundation of the entire Bible.

It reveals God’s character, explains humanity’s need for a Savior, and prepares the way for Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus Himself taught that the Scriptures pointed to Him (Luke 24:27).

If you’re new to studying the Old Testament, try this simple Bible-based approach:

📖 Pray for wisdom before reading (James 1:5)

📖 Read the passage in its full context

📖 Observe what the text actually says

📖 Compare Scripture with Scripture

📖 Ask what the passage teaches about God

📖 Apply the truth to your daily life

📖 Trust God’s promises and walk in obedience

As you study, you’ll begin to notice several major themes throughout the Old Testament:

✨ Creation (Genesis 1)

✨ The Fall of Man (Genesis 3)

✨ God’s Covenants with His people

✨ Deliverance and Redemption

✨ The Law and God’s holiness

✨ Prophecy and the coming Messiah

✨ Hope, restoration, and God’s faithfulness

The Old Testament is made up of:

📚 The Law (Genesis–Deuteronomy)

📚 History Books (Joshua–Esther)

📚 Poetry & Wisdom (Job–Song of Solomon)

📚 Major Prophets (Isaiah–Daniel)

📚 Minor Prophets (Hosea–Malachi)

One of the most important things to remember is that the Old Testament is not separate from God’s plan of salvation. It points forward to Jesus Christ through promises, prophecies, covenants, sacrifices, and foreshadowing.

The more you understand the Old Testament, the more clearly you will understand the New Testament.

Save this guide for your next Bible study session and share it with someone who wants to understand Scripture more deeply.

... Read moreStudying the Old Testament can sometimes feel intimidating due to its length and complexity, but approaching it step-by-step can transform your experience. I personally found that beginning with prayer, as James 1:5 suggests, invites clarity and guidance, making the study more meaningful. Reading passages in context helps avoid misunderstanding isolated verses and allows the overall narrative to emerge. One powerful insight is to track the recurring themes such as God's creation, the fall, covenants, deliverance, and prophecy, which all build a story of redemption that culminates in Jesus. For example, knowing that the Law given in Exodus and Deuteronomy not only governed Israel’s conduct but also pointed to the need for a Savior deepened my appreciation of Christ's role. Also, comparing Scripture with Scripture enhances understanding—many Psalms and Prophetic books refer back to earlier events and promises, creating layers of meaning. I recommend keeping a notebook or digital journal to note observations and questions, which makes it easier to apply lessons to daily life. Lastly, embracing the Old Testament as an integral part of God's salvation plan rather than a separate ancient text changed how I relate to the Bible. This perspective encourages trusting God's promises and walking in obedience, as the article outlines. Integrating this into your study routine can enrich your faith journey and illuminate the New Testament in new ways. With patience and these practical steps, the Old Testament becomes not just an overwhelming text but a vibrant source of wisdom, hope, and revelation about God's faithfulness throughout history.
