When handling and preparing deer meat, it's important to practice safe food hygiene to avoid cross-contamination. This includes thoroughly cooking the meat to an internal temperature recommended for venison, which kills bacteria, parasites, and any potential pathogens. Washing hands and utensils after handling raw meat helps prevent spreading harmful microbes. In fact, deer do not become sick from Lyme disease, and the bacteria do not survive in their tissues. Therefore, properly processed venison is safe to eat and does not carry Lyme bacteria that could infect humans through ingestion. The real preventive measure is avoiding tick bites by using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and performing regular tick checks after outdoor activities. This clears up the common misconception that venison can transmit Lyme disease. Instead, awareness and caution should focus on tick exposure and environmental factors. By understanding the transmission cycle, people can enjoy hunting and consuming deer meat with confidence while taking sensible precautions against ticks. So remember, don't blame Bambi—it's the tick that transmits Lyme disease, not the deer or the meat they provide.
