Transparent Moment
✨Transparent Moment ✨
Growing up in a home where I had to do almost everything for myself taught me that if something needed to get done, I had to do it myself. I also became the person who gave to everyone else but had a VERY difficult time receiving.
If there was something to be done, I wouldn’t ask for help. I would just get up and do it. Looking back, I realize my nervous system had learned that depending on other people wasn’t something that felt safe. So I became excessively self-reliant.
That showed up in my relationships too.
I often found myself with men who didn’t take the initiative or lead. Why would they when I was already stepping in to do everything? I unintentionally left very little room for someone else to show up. Then I found myself frustrated because I felt like I was carrying everything alone.
Ladies, sometimes we have to step back and allow a safe man the opportunity to lead. If we’re always taking over, we may never discover what he’s actually willing—or capable—of doing.
Honestly, I believe I was operating from high masculine energy. That’s another conversation. 🥴
Because I was constantly taking care of everyone else while neglecting myself, I eventually became emotionally and mentally exhausted.
Then one day my therapist asked me, “Do you know what hyper-independence is?”
Hyper-independence is more than simply being independent. It is an excessive reliance on yourself while avoiding help, support, or depending on others. On the surface it can look like strength, responsibility, and having it all together. But underneath, it’s often a survival strategy.
Many of us didn’t become hyper-independent because we wanted to. We became that way because, somewhere along the way, we learned that if we didn’t take care of ourselves, no one else would.
Don’t get me wrong. Independence is a beautiful quality. It helped many of us survive. But when independence turns into “I can’t ask for help,” “I’ll just do it myself,” or “I don’t want to be a burden,” it can lead to isolation, burnout, and difficulty building healthy, intimate relationships.
Through prayer, meditation, and doing the inner work, I began uncovering the roots of my hyper-independence. Healing helped me realize that receiving isn’t weakness. Trusting safe people isn’t weakness. Asking for help isn’t weakness.
I’m still on this journey.
Even now, asking for help can sometimes feel awkward. But every time I do, I’m reminding my nervous system that I no longer have to carry everything by myself.
We live in a world that celebrates independence. But I believe God designed us for interdependence.
Independence may help us survive.
Interdependence helps us thrive.
We were never meant to do life alone.
📌 If asking for help makes you feel guilty, awkward, weak, or like you’re burdening people, it may not just be independence. It may be a survival pattern your nervous system learned years ago.
DM me the word “HELP” if you’re ready to begin breaking free from hyper-independence. That could be your first step toward healing.
