I’m not your mom, but I still love you.

This pride month I just want you to know that I love you. I’m not your mom, but I am A mom. I can’t replace her, and I can’t take away your grief and pain, but I can tell you that the world is a better place with you in it. I can’t share in childhood memories or history, but I can offer an ear. You can tell me your accomplishments, your self-discovery and emergence as yourself, your worries, or anything else you can’t share with her and I’ll tell you how proud I am of you, how wonderful it is that you’re learning so much about yourself, and how strong you are for getting to this point. I can’t fill a hole where a supportive parent should be, but I’ll always do what I can to try and make things a little bit brighter. If so many people can hate an entire group of people for their identity, I can do the same thing with love.

I will love you. I will fight for you. I will show up when needed and I will use my voice to speak out against bigotry and hatred. I’ve been an activist for myself and my community for nearly two decades, and now I also do it for my son and the coming generations. I want him (and all of you!) to live in a world that is more full of love than hate.

Drink some water. Be gentle with yourself. I love you.

Love,

A Mom

... Read morePride Month is a significant time for reflection and celebration within the LGBTQ+ community. It serves as a reminder of the struggles and victories faced over the years. As a loving figure, it's essential to empower individuals by acknowledging their experiences, celebrating their identities, and providing an open ear for their thoughts and feelings. Practicing active listening can foster a safe space, allowing those who have lost supportive figures to express themselves freely. Remind them that love prevails over hate, and genuine connection can help combat feelings of isolation. Encouraging them to embrace vulnerability, discuss their journeys, and share their dreams can create uplifting dialogues that are crucial for healing. Remember, your presence can make a difference in someone's life, especially during tough times. In this shared experience of love and acceptance, let's continue to advocate for a world filled with more compassion and understanding. Together, we can build a loving community that empowers each individual to thrive, embodying the true spirit of Pride.
