Things to know before getting a Cat

🐾 Cats Are Obligate Carnivores 😺

Cats are meant to eat meat!! Throw out the carb loaded kibble and keep your babies healthy and hydrated with a protein rich diet. Diets low in moisture can lead to health issues, such as urinary infections, irritable bowel disease, obesity, and chronic renal failure.

I recommend feeding a variety of food types (e.g., pate, freeze dried raw, shredded, raw, etc.) and proteins (e.g., turkey, chicken, beef, etc.) to ensure that they are getting a well-balanced, nutritional diet.

Mental & Physical Stimulation is Essential

Although cats may be low maintenance compared to other pets, they still require stimulation (especially if they're a kitten). There are different types of toys that appeal to their natural hunting instincts (e.g., wand toys, laser, balls, etc.). I recommend finding one that your cat likes and engaging in play for at least 30 minutes a day to keep them content.

For when you're unable to play, there are also cat enrichment items you can buy to prevent your cat from getting bored. Cat trees, scratching posts, and treat puzzles are a few of many great options!

... Read moreOne thing I've learned watching my cats is just how deeply ingrained their hunting instincts are, especially when they 'play with their prey.' It's not just about catching a toy; it's a whole ritual! They stalk, pounce, give the 'prey' a chance to escape, and often carry it off. For them, it's a way to practice essential survival skills, release pent-up energy, and satisfy that primal urge. When my cats bat around a wand toy or even a crinkled paper ball, they're not just playing; they're enacting a miniature hunt. Providing safe outlets for this, like various toys that mimic prey (feathers, mice, laser pointers), is crucial. It keeps them mentally stimulated and prevents them from getting bored and potentially turning that hunting energy onto household items or, worse, becoming restless and destructive. I've found that rotating toys and engaging in interactive play sessions with them daily really helps to fulfill this natural need. Speaking of mental and physical well-being, the question of a cat's lifespan often comes up. As a cat parent, I constantly think about how to give my furry friends the longest, happiest life possible. While a protein-rich diet, as mentioned earlier, is absolutely foundational – my vet always stresses how important it is to avoid carb-heavy kibble for their urinary and kidney health – there's so much more. Regular veterinary check-ups are non-negotiable. Even when my cats seem perfectly fine, annual visits catch potential issues early. I also make sure their environment is safe, preventing access to toxic plants or dangerous household items. Enriching their space with things like a sturdy cat tree for climbing and scratching, and cozy spots for napping, significantly reduces stress. I even take them out in a pet stroller sometimes, or on a harness, to safely experience the outdoors, which adds so much to their quality of life. A happy cat is often a healthy cat, and reducing stress contributes immensely to their longevity. And for anyone considering bringing a tiny bundle of joy into their home, especially a four-week-old kitten, the care is quite specific. At this age, they’re still learning so much from their mother and littermates. If you're hand-raising or adopting a kitten this young, you become their primary teacher. Socialization is key. Gentle handling, exposure to different sights and sounds, and supervised play teach them to be well-adjusted adults. They’re usually still nursing or just starting to transition to wet food, so a high-quality kitten-specific diet is vital. Hydration is also paramount. I always make sure fresh water is available in multiple spots. Playtime for these little ones is often short bursts, but crucial for developing motor skills and social cues. This is also where the 'two is better than one' concept really shines for kittens. Watching my two foster kittens grooming each other and playing together taught them boundaries and prevented single-kitten syndrome, leading to much more confident and friendly adult cats. They learn so much from each other – it’s heartwarming to see and makes a huge difference in their development.
