“ought” from an “is.”

People love to say you can’t get an “ought” from an “is.”

Just because something is a certain way doesn’t mean we should do anything about it.

Cool. Sounds clever. Sounds philosophical.

But if you really follow that logic, then nothing means anything.

Not medicine. Not teaching. Not chess. Not society.

Take chess.

IS: If I move my knight here, I fork your king and rook.

IS: That leads to checkmate.

IS: Checkmate wins the game.

Philosopher voice: “But why do you ought to win?”

Answer: Because otherwise you’re not playing chess.

The moment you sit at the board, you’ve already accepted a framework where some moves make sense and others don’t. The “ought” isn’t floating in space — it comes from participation. From being a player, not a rock.

Same thing with medicine.

IS: This person is in pain.

IS: This treatment reduces suffering.

You can play word games and say, “But why ought we reduce suffering?”

Or you can recognize: the moment you choose to be a healer, a citizen, a human among humans — you are already inside a system of purposes.

We are not detached observers of the universe.

We are participants inside it.

And once you accept that, “is” facts become reasons for action because of who we are.

Now zoom out to society.

If we’re designing rules, laws, systems — we shouldn’t design them knowing who we are. Rich or poor. Healthy or sick. Safe or vulnerable. Majority or minority.

That’s the veil of ignorance idea.

Imagine you have to build a society, but you don’t know which role you’ll be born into. You might be powerful. You might be powerless. You might be the one who needs help.

Suddenly, “is” facts about suffering, inequality, and risk stop being abstract statistics. They become possible futures for you.

So:

IS: Some people get sick.

IS: Some people are poor.

IS: Some people are marginalized.

Behind the veil, that could be you.

And that turns those “is” statements into very real “oughts”: We ought to build systems that don’t crush people at the bottom.

We ought to reduce unnecessary suffering.

We ought to leave room for human dignity.

Not because the universe handed us a moral equation…

but because we are the kind of beings who have to live inside the worlds we build.

Just like chess.

If you refuse all “oughts,” then there is no such thing as “playing well,” “healing,” “teaching,” or “being just.”

You’re just moving pieces randomly on a board and calling it wisdom.

But humans don’t actually live like that.

We choose games.

We take roles.

We care about outcomes.

And once we do, the “ought” isn’t a mystery anymore.

It’s the natural consequence of saying:

I am a player in this world, not a spectator.

Maybe the smallest “ought” we can act on right now is also the most human one: remember their names. Not as statistics. Not as headlines. As people. If you’re safe to do so, write a name on your arm in Sharpie — someone lost, someone harmed, someone whose story matters. It’s not about performance. It’s about refusing erasure. All day you’ll see it when you reach for something, when you wash your hands, when you pause. A quiet reminder that rights are not abstract ideas — they are lived, and they are lost one person at a time. If we carry their names, even briefly, we push back against the world’s habit of moving on too fast. Memory is a form of resistance. Humanity starts there.
