My Favorite Note Taking Methods

Here are some of my favorite ways to take notes as a college student taking classes online. I personally love taking notes and have been taking hand written and sometimes online notes since the fourth grade.

Methods:

Outline Method: this is one of the most structured note taking methods and it visually looks organized. You add your main points as bullet points and elaborate underneath them.

Boxing Method: This is a style of notes usually recommended for revisions. Each page/set of notes is for one course or topic.

Cornell Method: A good style for studying. These types of notes organize notes and make it easy to find topics and information as well as a summary of all your notes.

Mind Mapping: This is a method that is good for individual topics that require a lot of explaining. It is easy to follow and connect topics to each other.

... Read moreHey everyone! As a fellow college student juggling online classes, I know the struggle of keeping notes organized. My original post touched on my favorite methods, but let's dive even deeper into how to make them work for you, especially when it comes to those precious handwritten notes! First, let's talk about the Outline Method. This one is a lifesaver for structured lectures. Think about those "point form notes" you sometimes scramble to write down. The Outline Method takes that and gives it a clear hierarchy. You start with a main topic, then indent for sub-points, and indent again for supporting details. It's like building a logical tree of information. I find it super helpful for subjects like history or literature where you need to track sequences and relationships. The pros of this method, as I’ve shown in my handwritten examples, are its visual organization and clear hierarchical structure, making it easy to see main ideas at a glance. Then there's the Cornell Method, which is my absolute go-to for active studying. It's not just about writing; it's about engaging with the material. Remember that handwritten example I shared, with sections for keywords, main notes, and a summary? That’s the magic! During a lecture, I fill the main notes section. Immediately after, I jot down keywords or questions in the cue column. This forces me to process the information. Later, I cover the main notes and try to answer my cue questions, then write a concise summary at the bottom. This method really helps with retention and review, which aligns perfectly with its positives: easy topic retrieval and a built-in summary for quick study. For those more visual or revision-focused sessions, the Boxing Method and Mind Mapping are fantastic complements. The Boxing Method, as you might have seen in my handwritten example where a topic is divided into boxed subtopics, is brilliant for consolidating information from different sources on a single topic. It's great for end-of-chapter revisions. Mind Mapping, with its central topic branching out into ideas, is perfect for brainstorming or understanding complex concepts and how they connect. Both have their own pros and cons, but they shine when you need to see the 'big picture' or consolidate specific details for a test. Now, beyond the methods themselves, let's chat about organizing those handwritten notes. Because what's the point of great notes if you can't find them? I always use a dedicated "student taking detailed notes notebook" for each subject, or at least a separate section in a large binder. Dating and titling every page is crucial – believe me, future-you will thank you! Color-coding is another game-changer; I assign different colors to main topics, definitions, or things to remember. After each lecture or study session, take 5-10 minutes to quickly review your notes. This reinforces the information and also helps you spot any gaps or areas to clarify. For online classes, I sometimes use a digital tool to scan my handwritten notes and organize them into folders, giving me the best of both worlds! Choosing the right note-taking method really depends on the subject and your learning style. For detailed, sequential information, Outline or Cornell are usually best. For creative brainstorming or visual learners, Mind Mapping can be superb. And for consolidating for exams, Boxing is a gem. Don't be afraid to mix and match! I often start with Cornell for lectures and then use Mind Mapping to synthesize key concepts for a chapter. Ultimately, effective note-taking is a personal journey. Experiment with these "information organization methods", find what resonates with you, and remember that the goal is to make learning easier and more effective. Happy studying!

I use the outline method, keeps everything so organized and flowing smoothly. I’m also a little OCD about my notes so this looks the best IMO
