TB treatment involves a multi-drug regimen typically referred to as RIPE therapy: Rifampin, Isoniazid (INH), Pyrazinamide, and Ethambutol. This treatment course usually lasts 6 to 9 months and requires strict adherence to prevent drug resistance. Nursing considerations are essential for patient safety: monitor liver function due to hepatotoxicity risk, educate patients about side effects — Rifampin may cause orange discoloration of body fluids and Isoniazid is associated with peripheral neuropathy, which vitamin B6 supplementation can prevent. Pyrazinamide also necessitates liver monitoring, while Ethambutol requires vision checks due to risk of optic neuritis. Implementing airborne precautions and proper use of personal protective equipment, such as N95 respirators and negative pressure rooms, is critical to protect healthcare workers and other patients from transmission. Nurses play a pivotal role in Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) to ensure medication adherence and successful treatment outcomes. For NCLEX preparation, integrating visual aids, flashcards, and practice questions focused on TB diagnostics, treatment protocols, and nursing duties can enhance recall and application skills. Engaging in study groups and clinical simulations builds confidence in managing this complex disease. The knowledge of TB pathophysiology, symptom recognition (persistent cough, hemoptysis, night sweats, weight loss, fever), diagnostic criteria, and nursing interventions not only aids exam success but also prepares future nurses to deliver competent and compassionate care in real-world settings.
