During my NCLEX preparation, I found that understanding the immediate response to critical pediatric emergencies is crucial, especially scenarios involving infants with alarming vital signs. For instance, an infant with a heart rate of 50 bpm who is cyanotic and apneic requires prompt action. In such cases, the priority is to deliver rescue breaths rather than starting chest compressions immediately, because the infant's respiratory failure is often the primary cause of bradycardia. In real clinical situations, delivering effective rescue breaths can rapidly improve oxygenation and heart rate, which often negates the need for chest compressions initially. Notifying the rapid response or code team is essential but should follow establishing airway and ventilation support. Obtaining intravenous access is important but is not an initial priority before ensuring the infant is ventilated. Personally, practicing this approach through simulation helped boost my confidence and understanding. I recommend nursing students focus on memorizing algorithms for pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and NCLEX practice questions that emphasize airway and breathing management first in infants with bradycardia and apnea. Understanding these steps is key to passing NCLEX and, more importantly, delivering effective care in urgent scenarios. Additionally, joining study groups and engaging in community discussions tagged #NCLEX, #NCLEXRN, and #NCLEXPrep can offer valuable peer insights and practical tips. Many nursing students and newly licensed RNs share their real-life experiences and strategies to manage similar cases, enhancing learning from a practical standpoint. This community approach complemented by thorough review of emergency protocols helped me immensely on my NCLEX journey.
