I started learning how to weave when I was 5 years old. Now I am 33 years old and still continuing to weave when I can. 🧶🐑🪡🪮✨

I carry so much love, appreciation, and gratitude for my late grandmother, my mother, and my aunts for passing down our Diné knowledge, culture, and language.

This matriarchal knowledge has been carried through several generations. How beautiful and empowering that this practice has sustained us for centuries.

I am deeply fortunate to have inherited the knowledge, the skill, and the creativity of our Diné People.

When I weave, I love to sing, to talk, to ask questions, to collaborate, to feel, to heal, to wonder, to strategize, to think critically — and to bring my rug to life.

When the rug is complete, it tells its story through the designs, the colors, the texture, and the depth.

Weaving is my art. My art is:

➕ My culture.

➕ My identity.

➕ My people.

➕ My community.

➕ My homelands.

And something very sacred. 🤲🏽❤️✨

I am a weaver, woven by seven generations of matriarchs. ✊🏽❤️🧶🐑🪮✨

... Read moreWeaving is more than a craft for many Diné artists; it is an enduring symbol of cultural resilience, identity, and history. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in Navajo traditions, I have witnessed firsthand how weaving serves as a bridge between the past and present. Each thread in a rug carries stories, teachings, and the spirit of those who came before us. What makes Diné weaving especially unique is the matriarchal lineage through which knowledge is passed. This tradition does not just preserve skills but also sustains community bonds and cultural values. For example, the act of singing or storytelling while weaving is an integral part of this process, enriching the experience with mystery and heartfelt connection. Colors and patterns are never random; they are thoughtfully chosen to represent elements of nature, spirituality, or clan symbols. This gives every finished rug a distinctive personality and an emotional depth that transforms it from a mere object to a vibrant narrative piece. For Indigenous weavers, rugs act as a language, communicating heritage and identity to all who behold them. Learning this art from a young age allowed me to appreciate the discipline and mindfulness required. Weaving became a form of meditation and healing, allowing me to process emotions and reflect critically. Collaborating with elders and family members fosters a sense of unity and collective wisdom that many other art forms may not cultivate. If you're interested in traditional Navajo weaving, I encourage you to explore how contemporary Indigenous artists incorporate ancestral techniques with modern influences, elevating and evolving the craft. Supporting Indigenous artisans not only helps sustain these precious cultural practices but also honors the sacred stories interwoven in every piece. In sum, weaving for Diné people is not just a creative output but a living legacy nurtured by generations of matriarchs. It embodies culture, identity, community, and a profound connection to the homelands, encapsulated in every delicate stitch.
