Dating mistakes WOMEN keep making⚡️

2025/1/22 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! Let's talk about something many of us have been through, often without even realizing it until much later: the dreaded "unofficial relationship" or, as some call it, the situationship. It's that murky middle ground where you're more than friends, but less than an official couple, leaving you constantly wondering, "What are we?" I know this feeling all too well. I once spent months in a situation like this, pouring my energy into someone who consistently told me they "weren't ready" or "didn't want anything serious," all while acting like my partner. It drained me emotionally and kept me from pursuing genuinely fulfilling connections. So, how do you spot an unofficial relationship, and more importantly, how do you escape it before it completely zaps your joy? One of the biggest mistakes I made, and I see many women make, is forgetting your standards. We go into dating with a clear idea of what we want and deserve, but then when someone charming comes along, we start to overlook those non-negotiables. He might be inconsistent, cancel plans last minute, or refuse to define things, but because we like him, we rationalize it. We ignore the very real red flags, telling ourselves, "he'll change" or "it's just a phase." But as my mama always said, "When people show you who they are, believe them." If someone explicitly states they don't want anything serious, take them at their word, no matter how much their actions might contradict it sometimes. Another common pitfall is being too available and chasing someone who isn't reciprocating. In an unofficial dynamic, you often find yourself being the one putting in most of the effort – initiating texts, planning dates, being the supportive listener. This creates an imbalance. You're constantly trying to earn their affection, to prove your worth, making you feel like you're auditioning for a role that doesn't even exist yet. It's exhausting! I remember feeling like I had to drop everything if he called, just in case he wouldn't reach out again. This behavior only teaches them that they don't have to work for your attention because you'll always be there. A healthy relationship is a two-way street, where effort is reciprocal. We also tend to make the mistake of ignoring major incompatibilities. When you're in an unofficial relationship, it's easy to focus solely on the chemistry or the fun moments, pushing aside fundamental differences in values, life goals, or communication styles. You might pretend his desire for a child-free life doesn't bother you, even if you dream of a family. Or you overlook his inability to express emotions openly, even though you crave deep connection. These issues don't magically disappear; they fester and cause resentment down the line. It’s crucial to acknowledge these differences early on. So, how do you break free? First, re-evaluate your standards. Write them down if you have to. What do you truly want and deserve in a partner? Second, embrace adult communication. This means having direct, honest conversations. Instead of playing childish games or dropping hints, clearly state what you're looking for. "I'm looking for a committed relationship. Is that something you're also open to?" Their response will give you clarity. Third, put yourself first. This involves setting boundaries. Reduce your availability if you're the one always initiating. Focus on your hobbies, friends, and career. Show yourself that you are worthy of respect and a defined relationship. Observe how they treat others – do they treat service staff poorly? That's a sign of how they might treat you once the "newness" wears off. Leaving an unofficial relationship can feel like a breakup, even though nothing was official. Allow yourself to grieve. Use this experience to reflect on what you truly need and to heal any past trauma that might have contributed to getting stuck in the first place. You deserve a relationship where you feel secure, valued, and where your partner is as excited to be with you as you are with them. You are worth a defined, loving partnership, not a maybe, not a someday, and certainly not an "unofficial" one.
