Growing Yellow Melons

2025/7/7 Edited to

... Read moreGrowing yellow watermelon from seed has been one of my most satisfying gardening adventures! There's nothing quite like slicing into a sweet, homegrown yellow watermelon on a hot day. If you're looking to grow yellow watermelon yourself, here’s how I did it, from the very beginning. First, let's talk about starting those tiny seeds. I always begin indoors a few weeks before the last frost. I found that germinating seeds indoors gives them a head start. I plant them in small pots filled with good quality seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and warm, maybe even on a heat mat if you have one. You'll soon see those little white roots emerging and then the first true leaves as your yellow watermelon seedlings sprout up – it's such an exciting moment! Once the weather warms up and all danger of frost has passed, it’s time to get them into the garden. Preparing your garden bed is crucial for growing healthy yellow watermelons. I chose a spot that gets full sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. Watermelons are heavy feeders, so I amended my soil with plenty of compost. A trick I've learned is to use black weed barrier fabric. This not only suppresses weeds (saving you a lot of work!) but also helps warm the soil, which watermelons absolutely love. I simply cut holes in the fabric and carefully transplant my young yellow watermelon plants through them. Securing the fabric with concrete blocks keeps it in place, as you can see in some of my pics. Now for the fun part: watching them grow! Watermelons need consistent watering, especially as the vines start to spread and the fruit begins to develop. Deep watering, rather than frequent shallow watering, encourages strong root growth. Keep an eye out for pollinators, as they're essential for fruit set. Soon enough, you'll spot tiny immature green watermelon fruit forming on the vines. It’s amazing how quickly they grow from a small flower to a developing fruit! As the season progresses, those sprawling green watermelon vines will cover your garden plot. It’s important to give them plenty of space. I love seeing the green watermelon fruit with light stripes getting bigger and bigger, partially hidden under the leaves. Knowing when to harvest a ripe green watermelon can be tricky. I usually look for a few signs: the curly tendril closest to the fruit should be dry and brown, the spot where the watermelon rests on the ground should be yellow (not white), and if you thump it, it should sound dull and hollow. There's nothing like holding a large, ripe green watermelon that you grew yourself! Finally, the moment of truth: cutting into your harvest! When you slice open that homegrown yellow watermelon, the vibrant yellow flesh with numerous dark seeds is just beautiful. The taste is incredibly sweet and refreshing, far superior to anything you can buy at the store. Growing your own yellow watermelon is truly a rewarding experience, and I hope these tips help you on your gardening journey!
