What’s the point of talking down to me?

I’m a grown adult. I brush and floss daily. I never had a cavity in my life, and the only dental issue were impacted wisdom teeth in my 20s, which is hardly something I could control. But EVERY SINGLE TIME I go for a cleaning, the hygienist acts like I’m a toddler who’s never seen toothpaste. They hit me with the same patronizing lectures: “Floss has to go between every tooth,” “You need to brush for a full two minutes.” It doesn’t matter that my teeth are clean, that the dentist always says I’m doing great. I’ve switched dentists across multiple states, and it’s the same everywhere, universal, unchanging. It’s infuriating. If there’s no plaque, no decay, no issues why not just say “keep doing what you’re doing”? Why the need to talk down, like I’m messing up basics I’ve nailed for years?

... Read moreMany patients report feeling patronized by dental hygienists, even those who maintain excellent oral hygiene and have no dental problems. This experience, often described as being treated like a child or hearing the same basic instructions repeatedly despite flawless dental records, can stem from hygienists following standard protocols or time-efficient workflows intended for educating a broad patient base. Dental hygienists typically emphasize flossing between every tooth and brushing for a full two minutes as foundational habits to prevent problems. Even if a patient exhibits perfect dental care, hygienists may be trained to reinforce these points consistently to ensure that no one slips into bad habits unknowingly. This can inadvertently come across as condescending or unnecessary to skilled patients. Understanding the root causes behind this behavior can help patients address it constructively. Patients may consider communicating their oral care routine and dental history clearly to their hygienist upfront to avoid repetitive lectures. Building a relationship where hygienists recognize your proven dental care might reduce patronizing interactions. Moreover, heightened awareness about this issue is prompting conversations within dental care communities on forums like #DentalHygieneNegging and #TreatedLikeAKid, highlighting the need for more personalized, respectful communication standards in dental hygiene practice. Ultimately, feeling talked down to during routine cleanings is a common frustration but can be mitigated by open dialogue and mutual respect. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene remains paramount—continue brushing, flossing, and attending regular cleanings while advocating for considerate treatment from your dental care providers.

I floss more than my sis and my hygienist says she has cleaner teeth than me.... I brush every time I eat and it still doesn't work...... so I can relate just in a different way.
