Our favourite music, clothes and books used to be markers of individuality – but

... Read moreIn today’s cultural landscape, the lines defining individuality through our favorite music, clothes, and books have become increasingly blurred. From personal experience, I’ve noticed that what once was a unique marker—like a favorite band or a particular fashion style—has now become more mainstream and widely adopted. For example, attending Lemon8 Pashion Week revealed how trends that started as underground or niche expressions have been picked up and amplified through social media platforms, making the once-personal feel more collective. This shift doesn’t necessarily diminish personal identity but instead transforms how we express it—moving from isolated choices to community-based expressions. It’s fascinating to reflect on how these changes affect us emotionally; sometimes, it feels like finding a unique voice is harder when everyone shares the same playlists or wardrobe staples. However, it also opens up new possibilities for shared experiences and belonging. Books, for example, that were once seen as unconventional are now widely available and discussed online, creating new spaces for discussion and connection. Overall, while our favorite music, clothes, and books may no longer serve solely as solitary markers of individuality, they remain powerful tools for self-expression and social bonding. Embracing this evolution can lead to a richer appreciation of how our tastes shape and are shaped by cultural shifts today.
