retinol beginner guide
starting a retinoid is one of the best things you can do for your skin — here’s your beginner guide to doing it the right way.
first, simplify the rest of your routine. a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser like Vanicream Gentle Cleanser and a simple moisturizer like Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer are your best friends when you’re introducing a retinoid — no harsh actives, no exfoliants, no fragrance.
for the retinoid itself, i’m recommending retinaldehyde specifically for beginners because it converts to retinoic acid in the skin more efficiently than traditional retinol, while still being available over the counter. Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.05% is a great option for most skin types, and Avène Retrinal 0.05% Multi Corrective Cream is my pick if you have sensitive or dry skin.
use the sandwich method: moisturizer → retinoid → moisturizer to buffer irritation while your skin adjusts. start every third night and build slowly.
and let’s talk SPF ☀️ personally, i think it’s pointless to use a retinoid if you’re not wearing sunscreen every single morning. sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to skin aging — so what’s the point of doing all this work if you’re not protecting it?
save this one and share it with a friend who’s been scared to start! 🙌

Using the sandwich method (never heard of) you do that every third night.. but can you still do a normal skin routine in the morning and night 1 2 (3rd sandwich) then night 4, 5 (6th sandwich) and so on? Also I have seen retinoid in a tube (looks like what you’d get prescribed (from Dr. Melxican) is that a good one to use?
