Residential schools were designed to assimilate Indigenous children, often stripping away their culture and identity. Living in such an environment for three years meant enduring strict rules, isolation, and a profound sense of loss. Similarly, the foster care system, while meant to provide safety, often brought feelings of instability and uncertainty as I moved between different homes.
One thing that helped me cope was finding small moments of kindness and connection, whether from peers or caregivers who genuinely cared. Sharing stories like mine is essential not only for healing but also to raise awareness about the continuing impact of these systems on individuals and communities. It's important for society to recognize the resilience of those affected and to support efforts that promote healing and reconciliation.
If you or someone you know is navigating similar experiences, seeking community support groups or counseling can be valuable. Remember, your story matters and can inspire understanding and change.
