Make your home sustainable

How to make your home more environmentally friendly.

First, remember these 3 things

1: Reusing things you already have until you can't anymore is much more eco friendly than buying cool products labeled as eco friendly.

Start with what you have, the switch to more sustainable products is a SLOW switch. Buy new things little bits at a time to replace stuff that you can't use anymore.

2: Being eco-friendly doesn't have to be expensive. Most of the sustainable lifestyle is just having reusable items (which is more cost-effective in the long run) It can be expensive sometimes to get some of these reusable items, but a lot of them can be made!

3: Be kind to yourself. It's ok to not switch every single thing. A few small switches at a time is a great start! Be realistic and know your limits!

(disclaimer, I am aware that bar soap shampo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, and dish soaps all exist. I am not adding them because these are often not an easy swap for people. Use them if you want to)

Hygiene:

•Safety razors (metal razors where you just replaced the blade)

•Use a microfiber makeup removing towel instead of makeup wipes.

•Use a washcloth, an African Net Sponge, or an actual loofah plant in place of a plastic loofah

•Reusable menstrual products (washable cloth pads, period cups, period discs)

•natural fiber toothbrush or a toothbrush with a replaceable head that is natural fiber

•Get a bidet (you still dry with toilet paper, but you use less toilet paper and you get cleaner!)

Kitchen/Grocery:

•Reusable beeswax wraps if you like plastic wrap

•Use powder dishwasher detergent

•Get a compost bin for non animal biproduct food waste (Make sure to research types of compost bins to get the one that works best for you)

•Just use normal washable food containers instead of plastic Ziploc bags (though you can also get reusable Ziploc bags)

•get reusable grocery bags and produce bags

•If you like scrub brushes for cleaning, replace them with natural fiber brushes (but only after they need replaced)

Other cleaning:

•Use powder laundry detergent

•Use natural or home-made cleaning sprays (as long as you research them plenty)

•Use cloth cleaning rags (which you can make out of old, ripped clothes)

•Use wool dryer balls

Other things to do:

•Learn to sew so you can mend and upcycle clothes or other fabric items

•Buy second hand! Thrift!

•Buy in bulk with shelf stable items

•Always continue to educate yourself

•Get a drying rack for clothes (If you think you will use it)

This actually makes clothes last longer and saves electricity

•Recycle, Repurpose and Reuse!

•Use cloth diapers (even part time)

•Don't rake up leaves in the fall!
