Response when someone tells you their age?

Basically when asking someone “ how old are you?” And they respond are you supposed to say something like “Well more to come!” Or just nod then look wistfully in the distance?

I’m not going around asking people their age 😅 I was more about when they ask you, you tell them then you ask them and they tell you. I just find myself not knowing what to say afterwards that’s all.

... Read moreOkay, so Olivia's post totally hit home for me! That moment when someone shares their age, and you're just... blank? Been there, done that! It’s like my brain goes into panic mode trying to find the perfect witty or polite reply. I remember being at a social gathering, similar to those bustling event spaces you see in pictures, and someone mentioned their age right after I’d asked. My mind raced! Do I compliment them? Do I make a joke? Or do I just nod and look 'wistfully into the distance' like Olivia mentioned? I’ve found a few go-to strategies that have saved me from countless awkward silences, and I want to share them with you! First off, the simplest and often best approach is to keep it positive and conversational. Instead of overthinking it, you can say something like: "Oh, really? That's interesting! What's your favorite part about being [their age]?" (This works wonderfully for any age and keeps the focus on them.) "Nice! How do you plan to celebrate your next one?" (Forward-looking and positive.) "That's a great age! You seem to have a lot of energy/experience/wisdom!" (A genuine compliment always wins, but make sure it's sincere.) What to say when a girl tells you her age: When a woman shares her age, especially if she seems a bit hesitant, focus on positivity. Avoid comments that imply she looks older or younger than she is, unless it's a sincere and appropriate compliment like, "Wow, you carry your age incredibly well!" Generally, steering the conversation to shared interests or experiences is best. You could say, "That's cool! What kind of experiences have shaped you the most?" or "I appreciate you sharing that. What's something you're really excited about this year?" What to say when a guy tells you his age: Similar to women, men appreciate genuine connection. If a guy tells you his age, you can use one of the general positive responses above. If he's older, you might acknowledge his experience: "That's a lot of life lived! What's the biggest lesson you've learned?" If he's younger, perhaps: "Awesome, you've got so much ahead of you! What are your current passions?" How to respond when someone says they are getting old (or hints at it): This is a tricky one, and it often comes up. My usual go-to is to offer reassurance and a positive reframe. "Getting old? Nah, you're just getting better/wiser/more distinguished!" "Age is just a number! You've still got plenty of adventures ahead." "I think every age has its perks. What are you looking forward to?" If they say it over text, a simple "Haha, you're only as old as you feel!" or "Still got it!" with a fun emoji works great. Witty comebacks about age (use with caution!): If you know the person well and the vibe is right, a lighthearted joke can work. The classic: "And looking fabulous for it!" "You're not getting older, you're leveling up!" "Don't worry, you're still younger than me... in spirit!" (Only if true or clearly a joke). Remember, the goal isn't just to fill the silence, but to show you're engaged and interested. When someone tells you their age, especially if they volunteer it, it often means they feel comfortable with you and are inviting a deeper connection. It's an opportunity to learn more about them or share a relatable experience. And what about how to avoid telling someone your age if you're not ready to share? If someone asks me directly and I’d rather not say, I usually deflect politely with a smile: "Let's just say I'm old enough to know better, but young enough to still do it anyway!" or "Oh, come on, age is just a state of mind, right?" It keeps the mood light without being rude or evasive. Ultimately, whether you're navigating a first meeting or just catching up with friends, having a few prepared phrases can make all the difference. It takes away the pressure and lets you enjoy the conversation more. So next time someone shares their age, you'll have a smooth, confident reply ready!
