I’ve spent hundreds of days of my life in a hospital room and two things are clear. 1. They give the sickest patients the best view and 2. The best view is the most mentally relaxing and taxing at the same time. It’s peaceful to see such beautiful sunrises and sunsets over mountains or buildings but it’s also so hard to watch everyone driving and walking across the street, picking up a coffee or two, walking with their kids holding hands, or even someone reading on a park bench. All you crave is routine, family, friends, being able to carry some responsibility or value and having reliable health that allows you to live. The African proverb "When death finds you, may it find you alive" encourages living a full and meaningful life, rather than simply existing. It's a call to embrace life fully and not allow fear or stagnation to hold you back. In other words let death find you when you are most yourself, living for your purpose and passions, not for others, not for your parents or to please specific people, loving what you do and having love for it. Coming close to death has taught me to stay “alive” as much as I can.

Spending extended time in a hospital room brings a unique perspective on life and the human experience. The view from a hospital window often symbolizes both a connection to the outside world and a poignant reminder of the routines and relationships patients miss. Observing everyday activities such as walking with family, drinking coffee, or reading in the park highlights the essential aspects of life we often take for granted: freedom, health, and social interaction. The African proverb, "When death finds you, may it find you alive," encapsulates a powerful message about living meaningfully, even amid illness or limitation. It challenges us not to merely survive but to actively engage in life with passion and authenticity. This concept is especially critical for those coping with chronic illness or prolonged hospitalization, who may struggle with feelings of isolation, loss of control, and mental fatigue. Mental health awareness is vital in these circumstances, as the emotional toll can be as taxing as the physical challenges. Embracing one’s passions and living purposefully can foster resilience and improve overall well-being. Maintaining connections, finding new ways to contribute, and embracing the small joys visible even through a hospital window can all support psychological health. This perspective encourages not only patients but also caregivers and society at large to recognize the importance of holistic care, which includes mental and emotional support. Life’s value persists regardless of health status, and each day presents an opportunity to find meaning and connection. Staying "alive" in the fullest sense means nurturing the mind, spirit, and relationships alongside the body, striving to live authentically despite limitations. In summary, the hospital window view serves as a metaphor for longing and hope. By embracing this viewpoint, individuals facing chronic illness can find inspiration to live richly, appreciating each moment and focusing on what truly matters. This approach aligns with chronic illness communities emphasizing empowerment, mental health awareness, and a supportive network that values both vulnerability and strength.
