I had just come out of a big epileptic seizure before even starting my day. I was too groggy to notice an alert from Echo — and Ruben was too busy cleaning up the mayhem from the first seizure to notice.

Typically, Echo barks to alert. But when human help is present, he’s taught to alert quietly and stay out of the way. He lays on top of me to keep my joints from dislocating as this is so common with Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Ruben didn’t get to film the first seizure and the home cameras were charging. From what I heard, it was sudden and chaotic.

It was only until we looked back at what he did capture that we noticed Echo knew and deliberately pushed my hand up to target the alert.

... Read moreHaving lived with Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (vEDS) and epilepsy, I can personally attest to the invaluable support that a seizure alert dog offers. Dogs like Echo aren't just pets; they're life-saving companions trained to detect seizures often before they happen. One extraordinary thing I've noticed is their ability to adapt their alert based on the presence of others. For example, unlike the typical loud barking to warn others, when people are nearby, the dog opts for a quiet, more discreet alert—like nudging your hand gently. This allows for a calm and less stressful environment during emergencies. In my experience, managing vEDS means being extra cautious because even a minor fall during a seizure can cause serious joint dislocations or vascular injuries. Echo instinctively lays on top of me during a seizure, which provides gentle pressure to stabilize my joints and prevent dislocations—a unique behavior that highlights the specialized training and bond between a service dog and their handler. Another practical tip: ensure that any home monitoring equipment, such as cameras, is always charged and ready. In chaotic moments, these devices can capture essential footage to review activity during a seizure, contributing valuable information to medical professionals. It's also important to share your experience with others through platforms and hashtags like #EpilepsyAwareness, #SeizureAlertDog, and #MedicalAlertDog. This helps raise awareness and support networks for people living with similar conditions. Overall, having a seizure alert dog transforms daily challenges into more manageable situations, offering both safety and emotional comfort in ways I couldn’t imagine living without.

Didn't think I had to say these things out loud
But someone needs to say it. I sat myself down at age 11 and thought about it logically, realized I saw shaving marketed to women mostly and asked why it's so important to look young when you're not. Just to come to the conclusion that we didn't choose this. Someone else chose it for us
