One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns. I'm counting these two books as one for my first pick because I read these back-to-back, nonstop. I wasn't expecting anything grand from these two, and you shouldn't either. In my opinion, it delivers base level fantasy and romance, but that's what I absolutely love about it. It's a story well done. Fantastic pacing, and well-written. Couldn't ask for anything better. I will say that the magic system is super unique, and I actually like the FMC! Highly recommend.
... Read moreIt's true, sometimes you just stumble upon a book (or a duology, in this case!) that completely captures your imagination. For me, that's what happened with Rachel Gillig’s 'The Shepherd King' series, specifically 'One Dark Window' and its breathtaking sequel, 'Two Twisted Crowns.' I’ve seen some confusion, but yes, these two books form the core of what many refer to as 'The Shepherd King Duology,' offering a complete, dark fantasy experience. When I picked them up, I wasn't expecting them to become one of my top reads of 2024, but here we are! The beauty of this series lies in its ability to deliver a truly immersive, atmospheric fantasy world without getting bogged down in overly complex lore. It’s perfect for when you want to escape into a story that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.
What makes these books so compelling? For starters, the unique magic system. It's incredibly clever and woven seamlessly into the plot, making you curious about its origins and limitations without ever feeling like an info-dump. Then there's the pacing – absolutely fantastic. I read both 'One Dark Window' and 'Two Twisted Crowns' back-to-back because I simply couldn't put them down. The tension builds effortlessly, and the plot twists keep you guessing. And let's talk about the main female character (FMC)! She's relatable, strong, and makes choices that feel authentic to her journey, which is something I always appreciate in my fantasy reads. The romance element is also incredibly well-handled; it feels earned and adds another layer of depth to an already rich narrative, rather than feeling forced.
Beyond the story itself, the visual presentation of books can often draw you in, and the covers for 'One Dark Window' and 'Two Twisted Crowns' are no exception. They perfectly capture the gothic, enchanting, and slightly ominous atmosphere of the world within. You know that feeling when a cover just gets the vibe of the book? That’s exactly what these do. The striking imagery, like the figure in a red cloak, hints at the mysteries and magic awaiting you. It's these kinds of details that make a book feel like a true treasure. I remember curling up with 'Two Twisted Crowns,' admiring its cover, feeling completely lost in the story. It’s part of the whole experience, creating that perfect reading moment.
Speaking of the reading experience, there’s nothing quite like settling in with a fantastic book. Whether it’s on a cozy couch, by a window, or even just relaxing on the floor, finding your perfect spot enhances the journey. I often find myself completely engrossed, legs propped up, perhaps even with a bit of personal flair like my own tattoos visible – it all adds to that feeling of comfort and personal connection to the story. It's about making the reading time *yours*, and a truly captivating book like those in 'The Shepherd King' series makes it easy to find that sweet spot. These books are more than just a story; they become a part of your personal escape, a world you want to revisit again and again.
So, if you’re searching for your next obsession in the fantasy romance genre, especially something that offers a unique magic system, a captivating FMC, and a story that flows beautifully from start to finish, then seriously consider picking up 'One Dark Window' and 'Two Twisted Crowns.' They aren't just books; they're an experience, and one I highly recommend adding to your reading list. Trust me, you won't regret diving into the world of 'The Shepherd King Duology'!
