5 college truths I wish someone had told me sooner

1. Your Professors Are A Resource🤝

I was so intimidated by my professors at first, but I promise they're just people who are passionate about their subject. Going to office hours just to introduce myself was a game-changer that led to a great internship recommendation later on.

2. Skills Over Your Major's Title🗺️

The pressure to have your life figured out at 18 is unreal, but your major is not a life sentence. I switched mine, and so did half my friends, so focus on learning transferable skills like critical thinking—that's what truly matters for your future.

3. Your Social 'Yes' Period ✨

That first month is a magical, awkward bubble where everyone is desperate to make friends. I said 'yes' to random floor movie nights and club sign-ups I wasn't sure about, and that’s how I found my people. You can always say 'no' later, but be open at the start!

4. A Quick Reality Check 🧺

Okay, this sounds silly, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know this! My RA had to deal with a pink-tinted laundry disaster in my first week. Take 20 minutes to learn from a parent before you go—your future self (and your clothes) will thank you.

5. The Freshman Loneliness Myth ❤️

This is the most important one: you will see everyone's highlight reels on social media and feel like you're the only one who's lonely. I promise you, you're not, and feeling that way during a huge life transition is normal and will pass.

Your first year is all about learning and growing, so be kind to yourself through it all. You're going to be amazing.

... Read moreStarting college can be both thrilling and overwhelming, and there are a few often overlooked realities that can truly make a difference to any first-year student’s experience. First, building relationships with your professors by attending office hours isn’t just for help with coursework; it’s a valuable way to gain mentorship, networking opportunities, and strong recommendations that can shape your career path. Many students underestimate how accessible and supportive faculty members are once you make that initial effort to connect. Secondly, your major shouldn’t limit your potential. Changing majors is common, and focusing on developing transferable skills like critical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving will serve you in any career. Use your early college years to explore subjects that spark curiosity and broaden your skillset rather than feeling locked into a predetermined path. The first month of college offers a unique 'yes' period where everyone is eager to make friends and connections. Taking advantage of this time by saying yes to social events—even if they feel outside your comfort zone—can help you build a supportive community and find your people. Remember that it’s perfectly fine to decline invitations later once you’ve established your circle. Don’t overlook practical life skills such as doing laundry correctly. Avoiding common mistakes, like color bleeding or shrinking clothes, can save you from unnecessary stress and strained roommate relationships. Spending a short time learning these basics before moving in will keep your clothes—and your college experience—caringly intact. Finally, the feeling of loneliness or homesickness during your freshman year is entirely normal and shared by many, despite what social media may portray. Remember that social platforms usually show filtered moments of happiness rather than the full reality. Being kind to yourself and acknowledging that this transition takes time will help you navigate these emotions and grow stronger. Embracing these truths can transform your first year into a meaningful journey of personal and academic growth.
