How to navigate Coercion in ABA & Life

2025/10/14 Edited to

... Read moreNavigating the complex landscape of coercion, especially within Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and our daily lives, is something I've come to realize is incredibly vital. It’s not always overt, and sometimes, even with the best intentions, we might unknowingly lean into tactics that feel controlling. Understanding this issue, as highlighted for RBTs, BCaBAs, and parents, is the first step towards creating more ethical, effective, and humane environments. For aspiring and practicing RBTs, understanding coercion isn't just about passing an exam; it's about safeguarding the individuals we support. The concept of coercion, often defined as using threats or aversive stimuli to gain compliance, is a critical component of ethical practice. In the field, this means recognizing when a client might be complying out of fear of a consequence rather than genuine motivation. I’ve learned that a key strategy is to focus on positive reinforcement and building strong rapport. If I ever feel pressured to use methods that rely heavily on 'threats' or seem harsh for immediate compliance, I know it's my ethical responsibility to seek guidance from my supervisor. It’s about ensuring that every interaction is built on respect and trust, not compliance through fear. For BCaBAs and BCBAs, the ethical considerations around coercion are even more profound. Our role involves designing interventions, and as the discussion around this topic suggests, we must avoid relying on punishment without rigorous ethical review. I’ve found that truly ethical practice means constantly questioning if an intervention is person-centered and if it genuinely empowers the individual. This involves exploring robust alternatives to punishment, ensuring genuinely informed consent from all stakeholders, and regularly reviewing data to see if our strategies are fostering positive behavior change through reinforcement, not just suppressing behavior through control. My personal takeaway is that a truly effective behavior plan prioritizes dignity and autonomy, making coercion unnecessary and building better therapeutic relationships. And what about caregivers and parents? Coercion for parents is often described as employing forceful tactics or threats to elicit child compliance. In the busy, often stressful daily life, it's easy to fall into this trap. However, I’ve seen firsthand how focusing on connection, clear boundaries, and offering choices can be far more effective than threats. Instead of saying, 'If you don't clean your room, no TV,' try offering a choice or a clear contingency like, 'Once your room is clean, we can watch TV.' It shifts the dynamic from a threat to a clear contingency, empowering the child with control over their choices. Building trust with your child means they believe you have their best interests at heart, not that you're just looking for compliance. Why does all this matter so much? Understanding coercion impacts therapeutic relationships in ABA and builds trust and cooperation in everyday life. When individuals feel coerced, whether a child in therapy or an adult in a relationship, it erodes trust, can lead to resentment, and often results in compliance only when the coercer is present. In ABA, this can hinder skill generalization and maintenance. By actively working to identify and eliminate coercive practices, we foster environments where individuals feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn and grow willingly. It’s a commitment to ethical practice and humane interaction that benefits everyone involved.

Don’t let the noise drown out the truth. The media, politics, and cultural bias have built an image of Islam that doesn’t reflect what’s actually written in the Qur’an — or how Muslims truly live. Islam isn’t oppression, it’s discipline. It’s not hatred, it’s justice. It’s not silence, it’s p
