How I stay active with chronic pain

I'm a personal trainer so living with chronic pain is definitely a challenge. But these are the tools I utilize to help me stay active and manage pain as it arises.

Physical Therapy

I go to physical therapy every time I have a flare-up and end up in pain. Its hands down the most effective treatment I’ve done. My PT helps me get out of pain quickly and gives me exercises that allow me to keep moving. I've been seeing the same PT for 5 years and wouldnt trust anyone else with my care!

Anti-Inflammatory Treatments

Early on in my recovery I had a steroid injection that was super helpful. It reduced the inflammation enough so I could tolerate more aggressive physical therapy. I also utilized naproxen to help reduce the inflammation however I no longer take it due to an allery. This is possibly the biggest frustration I have with my back pain because I can't take anything orally anymore.

Heat & Ice

Heat and Ice help with pain management now that I can’t take NSAIDs. They are useful if I feel a flare up coming on.

Core Exercises

The most important thing I do to stay out of pain is core exercise. I do my exercises 5+ time a week and prior to every single workout. This helps protect my spine and prevent flare-ups.

In addition to the methods discussed, exploring alternative therapies such as acupuncture can provide pain relief and improve function. Many individuals find that mindfulness and meditation also play a crucial role in managing the psychological aspects of chronic pain, helping to reduce anxiety and improve one’s overall well-being. Engaging in low-impact exercises, like swimming or cycling, can enhance mobility without causing too much stress on the body. Furthermore, incorporating a healthy diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods could complement your pain management strategy. Staying hydrated and ensuring proper nutrition can be beneficial in reducing flare-ups and supporting recovery. The journey is unique for everyone, and combining various approaches tailors a strategy that best suits individual needs. Remember to consult with healthcare professionals before starting any new treatment or exercise program.
