DOES IT HURT? BOOK REVIEW 📖

Going to be making a series because I just realized I haven’t posted any of my reads!! Starting this off by saying I read a LOT of dark, spicy romance so that is what you can expect to see most of.

Does It Hurt was one of the first books I read (once I landed on booktok) and I really loved it! H.D Carlton writes very dark pieces hence the trigger warnings at the beginning so definitely pay attention to those.

I burned through this one in two nights. I loved the character development and little twists that it had! Definitely not at all what I was expecting but so happy I ended up reading it. If you’ve read Haunting or Hunting Adeline, add this to your list!

... Read moreOkay, fellow BookTokers, let's talk about the Does It Hurt? book cover first, because honestly, it’s half the reason I picked it up! When I first saw someone holding the paperback, the visual just screamed 'this is my kind of dark romance.' The cover features a woman's profile, almost silhouetted, with a dramatic lighthouse in the background and stormy seas. It’s got this intense, atmospheric vibe that perfectly hints at the psychological and emotional turmoil within the story. There are even subtle text overlays that give it that edgy, almost found-footage feel, drawing you right in. It’s not just a pretty picture; it truly sets the stage for the H.D. Carlton experience. Now, if you're like me and constantly searching for your next dark romance read, especially after devouring *Haunting Adeline*, then Does It Hurt? by H.D. Carlton absolutely needs to be on your radar. What exactly makes it a 'dark romance'? Well, H.D. Carlton doesn't shy away from intense themes. This isn't your fluffy, lighthearted read. It delves into morally gray characters, psychological suspense, and situations that push boundaries. That's why those trigger warnings at the beginning are so crucial – pay attention to them! If you're sensitive to certain topics, it’s always best to be prepared. But if you appreciate stories that explore the darker side of human nature and love, with protagonists who often walk the line between right and wrong, then you'll likely find yourself completely engrossed. My personal experience with Does It Hurt? was truly a rollercoaster. I remember starting it thinking I knew what to expect from an H.D. Carlton book, but I was deliciously wrong! The character development was phenomenal; I found myself surprisingly invested in these complex individuals, even when they were making questionable choices. And the twists? Oh my goodness, they kept me on my toes! Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another layer would peel back, completely changing my perspective. That's why I burned through it in just two nights. The pacing was just perfect – fast enough to keep me hooked, but with enough depth to make me feel every emotion. It’s definitely one of those books that sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page. For anyone wondering if this book is for them, consider this: Do you enjoy a story that challenges you? Are you okay with themes that might be unsettling but ultimately contribute to a compelling narrative? If you answered yes, and you have a soft spot for spicy, intense reads, then I wholeheartedly recommend giving Does It Hurt? a try. It’s a standout in the dark romance genre and a prime example of H.D. Carlton's unique storytelling. It’s not just a book; it’s an experience that will leave you pondering its contents long after you’ve finished.

This is my favorite book of the year so far! It's an enemies to lovers, and the drama doesn't lack. The spice is good but it doesn't over rule the plot. It has a good twist at the end. I thought I knew how it was going to go but I was I'm for a surprise! Absolutely loved this book.
