How to make a sourdough starter

Ingredients to begin:

1 cup (113 grams) whole wheat or rye flour (King Arthur’s Bread Flour)

1/2 cup (113 grams) water (some suggest bottled mineral water is best, but tap water also works just fine)

... Read moreCreating a sourdough starter is an enjoyable process that allows you to cultivate your own wild yeast. It's essential to use high-quality ingredients like whole wheat or rye flour, which provide the nutrients necessary for fermentation. The hydration level of your starter also plays a critical role; consider using bottled mineral water for the best results, as it can be more gentle on the yeast compared to chlorinated tap water. Once you've combined your flour and water, store your mixture in a warm, draft-free environment to encourage fermentation. Regularly feeding your starter with equal parts flour and water will strengthen it and create a bubbly, active culture ready for baking. A well-maintained sourdough starter can last for years, and with proper care, it can produce loaves with wonderful flavor and texture. Keeping track of the feeding schedule is crucial; aim for at least once every 24 hours until your starter is robust enough for baking. Embrace this natural yeast culture, and you’ll soon be treating yourself to delightful homemade sourdough bread.
