หลายคนที่เริ่มฝึกภาษาอังกฤษจะเจอปัญหาเดียวกันคือ “จำศัพท์ได้ แต่ไม่รู้ว่าคำไหนอเมริกัน/คำไหนบริติช” แล้วพอไปดูหนัง ฟังเพลง หรืออ่านโพสต์ต่างชาติ ก็ยิ่งงง เพราะเขาใช้คนละคำแต่หมายถึงสิ่งเดียวกัน เราเลยรวมทริคที่ช่วยให้เลือกใช้ได้ถูกสถานการณ์ (และลดการใช้ปนกันแบบไม่ตั้งใจ) โดยยึดจากคำที่คนค้นหาบ่อยอย่าง couch, ผ้าใบ ภาษาอังกฤษ และคำในชีวิตประจำวัน 1) couch vs sofa ใช้ต่างกันไหม? โดยรวม “sofa” กับ “couch” แปลว่า โซฟาเหมือนกันค่ะ แต่ในอเมริกันจะได้ยิน couch บ่อยมากในภาษาพูด เช่น “Let’s sit on the couch.” ส่วน sofa จะดูเป็นทางการขึ้นนิดนึง ใช้ได้ทั้งสองฝั่ง ถ้าไม่แน่ใจ เลือก “sofa” จะปลอดภัยสุดในงานเขียน 2) ผ้าใบ ภาษาอังกฤษ = sneakers / trainers / canvas shoes? คำว่า “รองเท้าผ้าใบ” คนไทยมักแปลเป็น sneakers (American) หรือ trainers (British) ซึ่งถูกต้องทั้งคู่ แต่ถ้าคุณตั้งใจจะสื่อว่า “รองเท้าผ้าใบแบบผ้าแคนวาส” (เช่น Converse ทรงผ้า) สามารถพูดว่า “canvas shoes” หรือ “canvas sneakers” ได้ด้วย ตัวอย่าง: - I bought new sneakers. (US) - I bought new trainers. (UK) - These are canvas shoes. (เน้นวัสดุผ้า) 3) bin vs trash can ถังขยะใน UK มักใช้ bin ส่วน US ใช้ trash can (หรือ trash bin ก็เจอได้) ถ้าอยู่บ้านเพื่อนต่างชาติแล้วจะทิ้งขยะ ลองจำประโยคสั้นๆไว้: - Where’s the bin? (UK) - Where’s the trash can? (US) 4) candy vs sweet ขนมหวาน/ลูกกวาด US ใช้ candy ส่วน UK ใช้ sweets เวลาไปซื้อของที่ต่างประเทศจะได้ไม่เดินหางงๆ เช่น - Do you want some candy? (US) - Do you want some sweets? (UK) 5) จุดที่พลาดบ่อยสุด: ชั้นอาคาร (first floor/ground floor) อันนี้ทำให้หลงตึกได้จริง จากประสบการณ์เราเวลาไปโรงแรม/ห้างต่างประเทศต้องตั้งสติก่อน - UK: ground floor = ชั้น 1 (ชั้นล่างสุด), first floor = ชั้น 2 - US: first floor = ชั้น 1, second floor = ชั้น 2 ทริคจำ: ถ้าเห็นคำว่า “ground” ให้คิดถึงพื้นดินก่อน (ชั้นติดดิน) ถ้าอยากฝึกให้ชิน แนะนำทำ “list ส่วนตัว” ว่าคุณดูสื่อฝั่งไหนเป็นหลัก ถ้าดูซีรีส์อเมริกันเยอะก็ยึดคำแบบ US ไปเลย แต่ถ้าเรียนกับครู/คอร์สที่เป็น British ก็ยึด UK เป็นหลัก ที่สำคัญคือใช้ให้สม่ำเสมอในงานเขียนเดียวกัน แล้วสื่อสารชัดเจนขึ้นแน่นอนค่ะ
