Six years ago, I had just had the worst day ever at work… literally, the worst day in over 35 years. I was sitting at my desk with the lights off… just a dark office lit by a computer monitor.

My wife knew I was having a horrible day. She brought in my daughter and our newborn first grandchild for me to see. She turned on my office light, hugged me and gave me a big smile. I truly wasn’t in the mood.

They sat me down in my big office chair and handed me the few days old baby boy wrapped in a thin white blanket.

My heart melted. I truly felt a moment of innocence and love like I hadn’t taken the time to feel before.

Within twenty seconds it was as if nothing else mattered other than family. I saw how meaningless business and working was in the larger scheme of things.

I held the baby for close to an hour. A calm came over me that I hadn’t experienced before. I eventually gave the baby back to our daughter, gave her a big hug, turned off the computer, turned out the lights, and we all walked out together.

I felt no need to continue to try to solve any work-related problems that day or that week.

I was at peace when I went home that night… and have been ever since.

Holding a baby, when I was deeply depressed, has had an enormously positive impact on my life.

From personal experience, I’ve learned that connecting with loved ones—especially newborns—can create an immediate and profound sense of peace. When overwhelmed by work pressures or life's challenges, taking time to hold a baby can anchor you in the present and remind you of what truly matters. Babies seem to have a unique way of calming us with their innocence and vulnerability. Their tiny faces, delicate hands, and gentle breathing invite a shift in focus away from daily worries and toward empathy and love. Holding a baby promotes the release of oxytocin—the "bonding hormone"—which can reduce stress and enhance feelings of wellbeing. This biochemical effect helps explain why that simple act can feel so soothing. Moreover, the experience often leads to a re-evaluation of priorities. When faced with a demanding job or crisis, it’s easy to get caught up in frustration and negativity. Yet, moments spent with family remind us how fleeting time is and encourage gratitude for life’s simple gifts. For many, this reassessment sparks a needed shift toward balancing work and personal life, valuing relationships above material success. Incorporating these insights into daily life might involve scheduling brief but meaningful times for family connection, mindfulness, or even volunteering with children. Such practices can build emotional resilience and help manage stress more effectively. If you’re struggling with work-related depression or burnout, consider seeking out moments that nourish your heart and spirit. Sometimes, healing comes from the most unexpected and tender encounters—like holding a newborn.
