SHORT STORY (PUMA)
A man risked everything to win back his former friend.
Their story began years ago while they were volunteering at a veterinary center for wild animals.
That night, a lonely puma cub was brought in.
It was frightened, couldn't sleep, and wouldn't stop crying
until a man picked up its tiny body in his arms.
The puma cub snuggled against the man's chest, and
as he gently whispered and sang to it, it finally fell asleep peacefully.
From then on, it was the same every night.
The child could only sleep in his arms.
Eventually, the man took the puma home and let it sleep beside him until morning.
But time passed, and the puma cub grew up.
And according to regulations, he was to be moved to a nature reserve across the border.
At first, the man went to see the puma many times.
When he called its name, the puma would immediately run to him and
jump into his arms, just as before.
But gradually the number of visits decreased, and eventually they stopped altogether.
All that remained was one question smoldering deep in my heart:
Does that child still remember me?
Years later, one day, he felt an overwhelming urge to find out.
The man returned to the reserve.
He crossed hills and valleys, searching for days, but his friend was nowhere to be found.
When hope began to fade, he made one last gamble.
The man pitched a tent, threw open the entrance, and set up a small camera. Then he lay down under the starry sky and quietly, gently, whispered
the song that had once lulled the puma cub to sleep .
Time passed, and night deepened nothing happened.
But then, unexpectedly, he felt a weight.
A warmth clung to his body.
And then, a low, familiar sound.
The sound of a throat purring.
He has returned. Follow for more @ENS NEWS
Volunteering at a veterinary center for wild animals often reveals the fragile balance between human compassion and wildlife preservation. From my own experience, I understand how deeply bonds can form, even when the animals must eventually return to their natural habitats. This story of the puma cub reminded me of similar moments I’ve had while caring for orphaned or injured wildlife. The trust built through gentle touch and soothing voices can create a bridge that transcends species. The puma’s dependence on the man for comfort, especially at night, highlights the emotional needs of young animals, even wild ones, when removed from their natural environment. I recall a soft-furred fox cub that would only rest when held closely, calming down to the sound of whispered lullabies. But the inevitable transition back to wildlife is bittersweet, as regulations and the animals’ well-being demand their release. The pain of separation, and the lingering question—"Does the animal still remember me?"—is a common struggle among caregivers. This story also illustrates the power of patience and hope. The man’s decision to return to the reserve, setting up camp and revisiting the song that once soothed the cub, was a courageous act of faith in their bond. It reminds me of times when I’ve used familiar sounds or scents to reconnect with animals I’ve cared for, sometimes with equally surprising results. The unexpected return of the puma, indicated by the warm weight and the purring, is a testament to the lasting impact of kindness and trust. Such experiences reaffirm the importance of respecting wildlife regulations while honoring the deep emotional connections formed during rehabilitation. They reflect the delicate balance between human involvement and the ultimate goal of allowing wild animals to live freely and safely. These stories inspire many of us who work or volunteer in animal care to continue our efforts, hopeful that, in some way, our bonds with these creatures endure beyond the temporary moments we share.
