Love doesn’t need response to stay. Just be real

They were watching TV when his wife's heart stopped beating.

It was 2018. David and Bruna De Sárez were newlyweds, still giggling about growing old together. That Tuesday night started like a thousand others—dinner, couch, whatever was on.

Then Bruna collapsed.

Seizure. Cardiac arrest. Doctors brought her back. But the oxygen deprivation had already done its damage. Infection spread. And when the crisis finally ended, Bruna opened her eyes to a world she could no longer reach.

Vegetative state. Unresponsive. Unable to speak, move, or show any sign she knew he was there.

David had a choice.

Walk away. Rebuild. Start over. Most people would understand.

Instead, he quit his job.

He traded his future for hers—a future that would never look like what they'd planned. No more career. No more dreams. Just hospital rooms, medical debt, and a love that would never again say "I love you too."

Every single day for years, David has shown up.

He feeds her. Bathes her. Repositions her body so she won't develop sores. He talks to her like she's listening—because maybe, somewhere deep inside, she is.

There are no smiles. No thank-yous. No reassurance that any of this matters.

Just a man who refuses to let go.

The bills became unbearable. He had to ask strangers online for help—not for vacations or luxuries, but just to keep going. And still, he stays.

Because "in sickness and in health" wasn't just something he said.

It was a promise he's kept every morning he wakes up exhausted. Every night he falls asleep beside someone who can't hold his hand back.

People ask him why. Why not move on? Why sacrifice everything?

His answer is heartbreakingly simple: "She's still my wife. And I still love her."

Maybe she can't hear him. Maybe she'll never wake up. But David believes love doesn't need a response to be real.

It just needs to stay.

This is what true love looks like when Instagram stops watching. When there's no applause. When it's just you, your promise, and the person who can no longer remind you why you made it.

David and Bruna's story isn't a fairy tale.

It's something rarer.

It's proof that some people still mean forever.

... Read moreReading about David and Bruna's journey deeply moved me because it underlines what many of us might overlook in love—the commitment when things get truly difficult. Caring for someone in a vegetative state involves not just physical caregiving but an emotional resilience that few can imagine. From personal experience, I know that such dedication requires immense strength and a redefinition of what love means in everyday life. Sometimes, love isn't about grand gestures or shared smiles but about presence and faithfulness through silence and hardship. David's decision to quit his job and prioritize Bruna's care sheds light on the sacrifices caregivers make routinely, often without recognition. Financial struggles, emotional exhaustion, and social isolation are common challenges, yet love becomes the anchor that holds everything together. Supporting someone who can no longer respond challenges our idea of relationship reciprocity. It's a profound reminder that love can exist independently of acknowledgment, reward, or even interaction. The phrase "love doesn’t need a response to stay" perfectly captures this reality. For others in similar situations or those supporting loved ones with severe health issues, David's story offers hope and validation. It’s essential to seek community support and resources as caregiving can be overwhelming. Online fundraising, local support groups, and mental health counseling are crucial lifelines. Moreover, such stories encourage society to recognize and support caregivers’ often unseen efforts. Incorporating this mindset into our lives teaches us patience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of love’s many forms. David and Bruna’s story, spanning from 2017 to beyond 2023, exemplifies that love—true, steadfast love—is indeed about staying when it’s hardest to do so.
