Tokay Gecko

Finding those first two Tokay gecko eggs was an absolute thrill! It’s been a journey preparing our pair for breeding, and seeing their hard work pay off is incredibly rewarding. If you're considering breeding your own Tokay geckos, here’s a bit about what I've learned and what we've been doing. First off, ensuring the right Tokay gecko habitat is crucial for successful breeding. Our setup is a spacious terrarium with plenty of vertical climbing opportunities, like cork bark and sturdy branches, as these guys love to climb. We use a substrate mix that holds humidity well, usually a blend of coco fiber and sphagnum moss, which is perfect for egg-laying and maintaining the high humidity Tokays need (around 70-90%). Temperature-wise, we keep it around 80-85°F during the day, with a slight drop at night. A balanced diet, rich in insects dusted with calcium and multivitamins, has also been key to getting them in prime condition. Now, about the Tokay gecko breeding process itself. It's not always straightforward! We made sure our male and female were mature and healthy before introducing them. Tokays can be quite territorial, so closely monitoring their interactions is essential. Sometimes, pairs will get along perfectly, while others might need separation. It’s a common question: can Tokay geckos live together? For breeding, yes, a compatible pair can often cohabitate, but constant supervision for signs of aggression is a must. I've found that providing multiple hides and feeding spots helps reduce stress and competition. Once they started showing breeding behaviors – the male pursuing the female, specific vocalizations – we knew things were progressing. When it came to the Tokay gecko eggs, they were firmly attached to the enclosure wall, which is typical for this species. It’s important not to try and pry them off, as that can damage them. We're keeping the humidity high in that area and maintaining stable temperatures for incubation. Healthy eggs usually look plump and opaque white. If they start to dent or mold, it can be a sign of issues. We're patiently waiting, and it feels like forever, but seeing those little eggs gives me so much hope for a new generation of these amazing lizards. Caring for 'tuko' (another common name for these geckos!) during this period requires extra attention to detail. It's all about mimicking their natural environment as closely as possible and minimizing stress.
