Being the one who got away

Love is so hard sometimes. It can take you to the cosmos and open you up to experience the unknown. And… it can drag you to the lowest point possible…and you will find yourself crawling and clawing out of the grave of the love you once believed in. You had to walk away, and yet you still try to autopsy the relationship to understand what went wrong. Or, sometimes you know what went wrong. And you made the right choice.

Losing the love of your life and watching them leave is devastating. But what about being the one who got away? I don’t think I have ever heard anyone talk about it.

It feels confusing. Sometimes there’s hope…and sometimes there’s grief. You know you can move forward because you’re strong. But that little piece that still holds on to those dreams you built speaks up sometimes.

I used to ignore it…but now I hear it out. And I comfort it….

I’m sure some people who are the one who got away find satisfaction and even a little vengeance knowing that their former love misses them—that they finally know what it is they have lost. There’s a smugness and a feeling of elevation above the person who broke their heart. But that’s not how I feel.

I think we could have loved each other forever if circumstances had allowed…if the universe had aligned it. If what he had with me hadn’t scared him.

But here I am. Thriving and growing.

It still hurts. But I’m making it. And you can too.

... Read moreBeing the one who got away is a unique and deeply personal experience often overlooked in conversations about love and loss. It is a bittersweet feeling—carrying the memory of what could have been, while watching the other person move on. This emotional paradox can leave you wrestling with hope and grief simultaneously, making healing a complex process. Many who find themselves in this position experience an ongoing internal dialogue. On one hand, there is the recognition that some relationships are not meant to be, often due to timing, fears, or circumstances outside our control. On the other hand, there is a persistent longing for the potential future that was lost. This duality can bring confusion but also growth, as it forces introspection and a deeper understanding of love and self-worth. A crucial part of this journey is learning to comfort the part of yourself that still holds on to those shared dreams without judgment. Instead of suppressing these emotions, acknowledging and embracing them allows healing to take place authentically and gradually. Remember, it’s perfectly normal to feel the sting of what the heart once cherished. Being 'the one who got away' does not need to lead to bitterness or resentment. While some might feel a sense of smugness or take satisfaction in the other person's regret, true peace comes from personal growth and thriving beyond past pain. It’s about redefining your own path, nurturing self-love, and setting intentions for future happiness. Thriving means recognizing your strength and resilience despite the hurt. The universe sometimes aligns in unexpected ways, and relationships can evolve in surprising directions. If both partners grow and heal independently, there might even be a chance for reconnection or closure in the future. Most importantly, your story as the one who got away is your own—unique, valid, and filled with potential for renewal. In embracing this identity, you become an example of courage and authenticity, inspiring others facing similar experiences. You can move forward with hope, knowing that healing is a journey, not a destination, and that your worth was never defined solely by the relationship but by the person you continue to become.
