This Week in My Class

8/8 Edited to

... Read moreStarting the school year is always exciting, especially when you get the chance to create meaningful experiences for your students. In my special education classroom, the first week is all about building connections and establishing a welcoming environment that supports learning and growth. One activity I find particularly impactful is making handprint crafts for a time capsule. This simple project not only allows students to personalize their space but also gives us a visual reminder of their progress throughout the year. I remember how thrilled my students were to see their colorful handprints displayed in the hallway alongside inclusion posters created with vibrant Crayola markers. These visuals promote a sense of belonging and everyone’s unique contribution to the class community. Another highlight is incorporating games during learning stations. They help ease any first-week jitters and encourage social interaction, especially for students who might need more support adjusting to new routines. I used matching keyboard games and fun countdown activities — these small moments get students excited and engaged right away! Capturing first-day moments with updated signs and sweet treats also boosts morale and helps students feel valued. Sharing these personalized touches with families strengthens home-school connections, which are vital for student success. Looking forward, I’m energized knowing that this warm, inclusive start sets the stage for a positive and productive year. If you’re preparing for your first week, consider integrating these crafts and games to create lasting memories and foster a nurturing learning environment.
