volunteering with FABSCRAP Part 1
My first time volunteering with @fab_scrap
Two months ago my brand @essexharlan became a partner in their recycling program.
Even after years in sustainable fashion, seeing the sheer amount of leftover fabric was still shocking.
Reducing textile waste is one of our core missions @essexharlan and this experience was both fun and inspiring ♻️
FABSCRAP is a pioneering organization committed to the reduction of textile waste through innovative recycling programs. As a volunteer sorting fabric waste at the FABSCRAP Brooklyn Warehouse, participants gain firsthand exposure to the magnitude of leftover materials generated by the fashion industry. EssexHarlan, a sustainable fashion brand based in New York City’s Lower East Side, has partnered with FABSCRAP to further their commitment to environmental responsibility by utilizing end-of-roll, recycled, and deadstock fabrics in their designs. The sheer volume of fabric waste encountered during the sorting process underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices in fashion manufacturing. FABSCRAP’s community board and partner portal facilitate collaboration among brands, designers, and recyclers to streamline fabric reuse and waste diversion. By participating in FABSCRAP’s recycling service operations, brands can reduce their environmental footprint while gaining access to valuable fabric resources. This partnership and volunteering experience not only advance EssexHarlan’s mission to reduce textile waste but also inspire creative approaches to sustainable fashion design. Consumers and brands alike are encouraged to recognize the importance of circular fashion systems, where leftover materials are reintegrated into new products rather than ending up in landfills. Overall, volunteering with FABSCRAP exemplifies how hands-on involvement in fabric recycling programs can deepen understanding of sustainability challenges and opportunities in the fashion industry. This experience combines environmental impact with community engagement, motivating more brands to adopt responsible production and consumption practices that support a greener future.
