Forgiveness Isn’t Pretending

Rafiki/friend/amigo, day 13 of 30; Forgiveness Isn’t Pretending

Matthew 6:14 – “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you…”

Forgiveness isn’t saying “it was okay.”

It’s saying, “I’m choosing to heal even though it wasn’t.”

Love doesn’t keep score. It creates space for new stories — even when it still aches.

“What’s one thing you’ve learned about forgiveness?”

I’ll go first: I learned that I can forgive someone and still protect my peace by keeping healthy distance.

... Read moreI remember a time when the word 'forgiveness' felt like a heavy burden. I thought it meant I had to pretend everything was okay, sweep hurt under the rug, or even welcome back someone who deeply wronged me. But through my own journey and reflection, I've truly learned that forgiveness isn't pretending. It’s far more profound than that. For me, understanding forgiveness began when I realized it wasn't about condoning what happened or forgetting the pain. It’s definitely not about saying, 'it was okay.' Instead, it's a courageous act of saying, 'I’m choosing to heal even though it wasn’t.' This distinction was a game-changer. It allowed me to acknowledge my hurt without being trapped by it. Many times, we're taught to just 'forgive and forget,' but I’ve found that you can absolutely forgive but don't forget the lesson learned, especially when it comes to protecting yourself. One of the biggest misconceptions I had was equating forgiveness with reconciliation. I used to feel immense pressure to repair a relationship immediately after forgiving, but I learned that forgiveness does not equal reconciliation. You can extend forgiveness in your heart, releasing yourself from the burden of anger and bitterness, while still maintaining a healthy distance to protect your peace. This was a vital lesson for me – setting boundaries became an act of self-care, not unforgiveness. The biblical perspective really helped solidify this understanding. Matthew 6:14 reminds us, 'For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you…' This isn't just a suggestion; it's a powerful principle. It highlights that God's forgiveness for us is often intertwined with our willingness to forgive others. It deeply motivated me to learn how to forgive. I realized that holding onto resentment was only hurting me, like the saying goes, 'unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.' It was keeping a root of bitterness alive in my own heart. So, why is it important to forgive others? Beyond the spiritual aspect, it's crucial for our mental and emotional well-being. Forgiveness liberates us from the past, allowing us to create space for new stories. It brings a profound sense of inner peace. I used to struggle with the idea of what does the Bible say about forgiving someone who isn't sorry. This was tough. But I came to understand that my forgiveness isn't contingent on their apology or remorse. It's an internal release for my benefit, allowing me to move forward, regardless of whether the other person acknowledges their wrong or seeks reconciliation. It's about letting go of the anger that binds you to them. It's a journey, not a destination. There are days when old hurts resurface, but I remind myself that love doesn't keep score. It creates space for healing. By choosing to forgive, setting those healthy boundaries, and protecting my peace, I've found a greater sense of freedom and emotional well-being than I ever thought possible. It truly is a path to healing and inner peace.
