From an overpacker to a light packer. Only packed 5 days worth of clothes and just did laundry halfway through. Minimal toiletries. Just used shampoo, conditioner and soap from places we stayed at. Bought skincare essentials in japan. Definitely made our travel easier to navigate. 💜🇯🇵 #japantravel #backpacking #travelbackpack #forclaz #overpacker
Traveling across Japan by train means you need to pack smart and light to move easily and enjoy your trip without being bogged down by heavy luggage. From my experience, the biggest game-changer was cutting down my clothing to just five days’ worth and committing to doing laundry halfway through the trip. This not only saved space but also gave me freedom to explore without constantly worrying about my bags. Equally important was the decision to minimize toiletries. Japan is known for its availability of quality shampoo, conditioner, and soap at most accommodations, so I skipped bringing my own bulky bottles. Instead, I only carried essential skincare products that I purchased in Japan, which helped lighten the load further. If you’re shifting from overpacking tendencies, consider investing in a reliable backpack sized appropriately for your trip duration—something around 40 liters works well for 10 days of travel across Japan’s cities and countryside. Having a compact, organized pack makes hopping between trains and accommodations effortless. This journey taught me that packing less isn’t about sacrificing comfort but about traveling smarter. By embracing lightweight packing, I enjoyed greater mobility and less stress, allowing me to fully appreciate the immersive experience of backpacking Japan.
