Day 1: Nikko 🇯🇵
📍 Toshogu Shrine
📍 Shinkyo Bridge
📍 Kanmangafuchi Abyss
We did not go to Kegon Falls because he doesn’t wanna take long ride of a bus. We also skipped the Rinnoji Temple because we’re already tired. 😁
Visiting Nikko from Tokyo is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in Japan’s rich history and beautiful nature. The journey itself is quite enjoyable — taking the Spacia X train from Asakusa Station offers a comfortable and scenic two-hour ride, and if possible, reserving a premium seat enhances the experience with more space and amenities. One of the highlights is Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ornate architecture and intricate carvings. While exploring the shrine grounds, it’s easy to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, but prepare for some walking and stairs, as the area involves around 200 to 300 steps, which was a surprise for many travelers. Shinkyo Bridge marks an iconic entrance to Nikko’s sacred area. It’s a gorgeous red-lacquered bridge that offers great photo opportunities and a sense of stepping into a different era. From there, a 15 to 20-minute walk takes you to Kanmangafuchi Abyss, a tranquil riverside path lined with rows of Jizo statues. This quiet and sacred place is perfect for reflection and taking in nature’s beauty away from typical tourist congestion. While some sites like Kegon Falls and Rinnoji Temple are popular, sometimes skipping them for the sake of comfort, especially if traveling with companions who prefer less bus time or more rest, is perfectly fine and helps maintain a relaxed pace. After a fulfilling day in Nikko, returning to Tokyo via the Spacia X train again offers a chance to unwind. It’s advisable to check train cleaning schedules and make seat reservations early to ensure a comfortable trip back. Overall, this itinerary blends cultural exploration with peaceful nature walks, ideal for anyone looking to experience authentic Japan without the rush. Packing comfortable shoes, bringing some snacks, and keeping an open mind to skipping certain attractions when tired can make your day trip truly enjoyable and stress-free.
