RUN, HIDE, FIGHT and sprint from positions of cover, your first priority being to get away as quick and as safely as possible!
Being on a college campus, it's easy to feel safe and protected, but I've personally realized how important it is to be prepared for anything. We hear reports on college campuses of active threats, and it's scary. That's why understanding the 'Run, Hide, Fight' protocol isn't just a guideline; it's a critical part of campus safety that every student should know. It might seem horrible to worry about, but being prepared can make all the difference. First, let's talk about 'RUN.' This is always your first and best option. If you can safely get away, do it! My biggest takeaway is that running away is a valid tactic, and your first priority should always be to get away as quickly and safely as possible. Don't just immediately stand there or run aimlessly. Ideally, you want to sprint from a position of cover, moving towards an exit or a safer area where people can't see you, or where bullets can't reach. For instance, if you're hiding behind a thick portion of a wall, that's better than being in an open field. If you're in an open area, that's when you might want to consider zigzagging to reduce the center of mass, making yourself a harder target, but always keeping in mind it's slowing you down and making you more exposed. Always check your surroundings; sometimes your ears can deceive you, so be sure you actually know where those sounds are coming from before you commit to a direction. If running isn't an option, then you need to 'HIDE.' Find a place where you can conceal yourself from the threat. My goal would be to find a room, lock or barricade the door with heavy furniture, and turn off the lights. Silence your phone and stay as quiet as possible. This isn't just about being out of sight; it's about making yourself difficult to find and reaching a place where you're not an easy target. Imagine you had somewhere like this where you could hide, but if you're in an open area, hiding might be harder. Finally, 'FIGHT' is your absolute last resort. If your life is in imminent danger and you have no other option, you must be prepared to fight with everything you've got. This means committing to the fight with aggression and using anything at your disposal as an improvised weapon. Remember, trust your gut instinct. If you feel like you need to act, then act decisively. I've learned that self-defense isn't just about physical training; it's about mental preparedness and the will to survive. These are tough conversations, but as someone teaching self-defense, I believe it's vital for college life. Knowing this protocol is a crucial college hack for staying safe. It’s not about living in fear, but about empowering yourself with knowledge. So, if you know somebody on a college campus, share these tips with them. It could truly make a difference.
