What Your Coffee Habit Really Costs

Coffee is worth enjoying. But if it is a daily habit, it can quietly turn into hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year depending on where you buy it and how often you go.

I compared coffee shop runs vs home coffee and added a free calculator so you can check your own number. Save this if you love coffee and want to know the real tradeoff.

... Read moreAs someone who truly appreciates a good cup of coffee every day, I’ve learned that the cost of this beloved habit can vary widely depending on where and how you get your caffeine fix. From my personal experience, buying coffee at popular chains like Starbucks or Biggby can quickly rack up expenses—over $2,000 a year for one daily Starbucks specialty coffee isn’t out of the ordinary. On the flip side, making coffee at home can drastically cut those costs, even when opting for convenient methods like Keurig pods. What really surprised me was the difference between specialty café coffee and home-brewed drip coffee. For example, one year’s worth of Starbucks specialty drinks could cost nearly $2,190, whereas home drip coffee might only cost around $73 annually. That’s a staggering difference! However, I also found that using bulk Keurig pods can reduce pod costs from $274 to $91 a year. Another important takeaway is understanding the tradeoff—not necessarily quitting coffee, but being aware of where your money goes. By using a coffee cost calculator (like the free one at EveryDollarGrows.com), I was able to see exactly how much I was spending and make more budget-friendly choices without sacrificing my daily ritual. If you love coffee and want to balance enjoyment with financial mindfulness, tracking your coffee spending is a great first step. Whether it’s two coffees a day or just one, knowing the numbers helps you make better decisions and could free up money for other things you enjoy. Plus, brewing at home doesn’t mean sacrificing quality—you can still enjoy your favorite flavors with a little planning and the right equipment. Overall, this insight has helped me appreciate my coffee treats even more, knowing they're a well-informed choice rather than an unnoticed expense. Trying out the calculator might be the simplest, most eye-opening way to see your coffee habit in a new light.

It clears your mind, eases overthinking, and helps you reconnect with yourself one page at a time. Some days you write goals. Other days you write feelings. Either way, every entry becomes part of your growth story. 🤍✨ Start small. 5 minutes in the morning. A cup of coffee. One honest thought.
