How to deal with workplace toxicity as a Nurse

There is nothing worse than a toxic workplace. A hospital can be so amazing and it can be your dream job but a toxic work environment will have you wishing you never took the job in the first place.

I, unfortunately, have experienced toxic environment. I loved the job and most of the co-workers. There were just a few of them that made working their horrible.

Here’s some tips on how to handle a toxic work place:

- Remember that it is not your fault. I would go through my day to day wondering what I did wrong and why this was happening to me

- Don’t let them get to you, that is what they want. For some reason seeing a negative reaction and reacting at all to their actions is what they look for. So try your best to not engage.

- Escalate. You need to report their behaviors so they know they can’t get away with it. I regret not reporting them to HR. That’s why HR exists to help you with issues like this.

- If all else fails, find a new job. It is not worth stressing, crying, and putting yourself through a toxic work environment when there are so many jobs out there. Do yourself a favor and find one of those jobs and leave

... Read moreAs nurses, we're often seen in scrubs, hustling through shifts, and sometimes, yes, taking a quick mirror selfie in the hospital bathroom. But have you ever stopped to think about what those nurse selfies truly represent? For many of us, they're more than just a picture; they're a snapshot of life, a moment of connection, or even a quiet act of self-care amidst the daily grind. I’ve been there – juggling patient care, charting on Epic Systems, maybe even sipping from my Starbucks tumbler or using that quirky dinosaur pen at my desk. Those little personal touches, like having 'INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY' neatly noted in a notebook, are anchors in a demanding environment. Sometimes, snapping a selfie is a way to acknowledge that you’re still a person, not just a uniform, especially when things get tough. It's a quick way to document a small win, a brief moment of calm, or just to remind yourself you made it through another stretch. When you're dealing with workplace toxicity, these small moments become even more crucial. That iced coffee break, perhaps with whipped cream and cocoa powder, in a quiet cafe away from the hospital chaos, isn't just about caffeine; it's a mental health break. It's a moment to breathe, to reset, and to remind yourself that there's a world beyond the negativity. A selfie taken during such a break can be a visual diary entry – a way to say, 'I'm taking care of myself today.' Nurse selfies can also foster a sense of community. Sharing glimpses of our lives, both the professional and the personal, allows us to connect with other nurses who understand the unique challenges we face. In a toxic environment where you might feel isolated or unsupported by direct colleagues, this online community can be a lifeline. It reminds you that your experiences are valid and that you're not alone in struggling with a difficult situation. Ultimately, whether it's a mirror selfie in the scrubs, a snapshot of your organized (or chaotic!) desk setup, or a picture of a well-deserved coffee break, these moments are about finding joy and maintaining your identity. They serve as a powerful reminder to prioritize your well-being. If a workplace becomes so toxic that even these small acts of self-expression and self-care feel impossible or are met with judgment, it's a huge red flag. Your peace and mental health are paramount, and sometimes, those little selfies are just the beginning of a bigger conversation about what you need to thrive, both professionally and personally.
