... Read moreDiscovering my own attachment style was a huge lightbulb moment, truly transformative for understanding why certain relationship patterns kept repeating. It's not about blaming, but about recognizing the 'wounds and behaviors' we bring, as the original post mentions. It’s the first step towards gaining more 'freedom in relationships' and breaking those cycles. I want to share a bit more about how you can figure out your attachment style and start your own healing journey, just like I did. Based on what I've learned, there are three main insecure attachment styles people often experience before moving towards a more secure one. 1. Anxious Attachment Style: If you often worry about abandonment, constantly needing comfort and reassurance from your partner, or having doubts about their feelings, you might lean towards an anxious attachment. I used to have 'negative self-views' and found it difficult to truly trust others, always 'seeking reassurance'. It felt like walking on eggshells. Healing this involves learning to soothe yourself, building self-worth, and communicating needs clearly without expecting immediate relief. It’s a process of trusting yourself first. 2. Avoidant Attachment Style: Do you value your independence, often feeling 'discomfort with intimacy' or emotional closeness? 'Signs of avoidant attachment' include 'distancing when distressed' and a 'fragile positive self-view' you protect fiercely. I've seen partners with this style who seemed to hold 'negative views of partners' who needed too much closeness, always 'needing independence'. It’s hard to 'deal with an avoidant partner' if you don't understand this. For those with an avoidant style, healing involves gradually allowing vulnerability, recognizing that true independence doesn't mean isolation. 3. Fearful-Avoidant (Disorganized) Attachment Style: This one can feel like a real rollercoaster. If you recognize a 'persistent negative self-view', a deep 'fear of rejection', and often feel unworthy of love, leading to 'sabotaging relationships', you might identify with fearful-avoidant attachment. People with this style often desperately want connection but simultaneously push it away due to past hurts. The cycle of wanting intimacy but fearing it makes 'difficulty connecting' a huge challenge. Healing here often involves addressing past traumas and working on 'emotional regulation' to break the 'fearful avoidant attachment cycle'. It’s about creating safety within. Moving Towards Secure Attachment: The ultimate goal for many of us is secure attachment. This is where 'emotional regulation' becomes natural, you can 'recognize stress' without letting it overwhelm you, and you're comfortable 'giving and receiving comfort'. Secure individuals are great at 'providing constructive support' and 'accepting criticism' without feeling attacked. It's truly a state of balance allowing for healthy, interdependent relationships. Starting Your Healing Journey: So, how do you move forward? Self-Awareness: As mentioned by the OCR, "how to figure out your attachment style" is step one. Pay attention to your thoughts and behaviors. Journaling helps. Education: Read up on 'attachment theory'. Understanding the roots brings clarity. Therapy: For deeper wounds, especially with 'disorganized attachment', a therapist specializing in attachment can provide invaluable guidance. Practice New Behaviors: Start small. Challenge anxious urges or try small acts of vulnerability if avoidant. Choose Secure Partners: As you heal, you'll naturally be drawn to or better able to foster secure connections. Remember, healing isn't linear, but every step towards understanding your attachment style is a step towards more fulfilling relationships. You deserve healthy love!
