A severed limb was blamed for driving her insane

A severed hand landed in her lap. It was blamed for her becoming “irrecoverably insane”.

Family accounts claim that during a riot in St. Petersburg, a severed hand was thrown into the carriage of Effie Dunsmuir, one of the daughters of the coal baron who built Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, B.C.

We don’t know how much that moment contributed to her decline but by age forty, in 1908, Effie was declared “irrecoverably insane” and institutionalized.

Because of her wealth, institutionalization likely meant living in private hospital rather than a public asylum. Think quiet gardens, routines, and a life hidden from view. Mental illness was typically treated as a source of shame.

At Craigdarroch Castle today, a placard in Effie’s childhood room describes her as the “suffering socialite”.

... Read moreThe story of Effie Dunsmuir is a poignant example of how traumatic events and societal attitudes toward mental illness shaped individual lives in the early 20th century. The incident where a severed hand was thrown into Effie’s carriage during a St. Petersburg riot might seem surreal, but such moments could leave deep psychological scars, especially when followed by the stigmatization of mental health struggles. In Effie's time, the understanding of mental illness was limited, and being declared "irrecoverably insane" often led to lifelong institutionalization. Given her affluent background, Effie’s experience reflects the differences in treatment based on social class. Instead of a public asylum, she likely lived in a private hospital with access to quieter surroundings, which was intended to be more comfortable but also meant isolation and concealment from public view. From visiting historical sites like Craigdarroch Castle, one can see how stories like Effie’s have lingered through time, highlighting the personal costs behind wealth and status. The castle’s placard calling her the “suffering socialite” reminds visitors not only of her tragic decline but also of the social pressures and misunderstandings surrounding mental illness. Today, mental health awareness has considerably progressed. Personal stories and historical accounts like Effie’s remind us of the importance of compassion, early intervention, and continued efforts to reduce stigma. This story encourages reflection on how trauma impacts mental well-being and how societal support systems have evolved to better serve individuals facing such challenges. For those interested in local history and mental health advocacy, Effie Dunsmuir’s legacy at Craigdarroch Castle serves as a solemn yet enlightening case study. It prompts us to consider how far we have come in understanding mental health and the significance of remembering those whose stories were hidden away due to past prejudices.
