When Humility Works Against You
As a first-generation Latina, I was raised to believe that staying humble and letting my work speak for itself was the right way to move forward. I thought if I kept my head down, worked hard, and delivered results, recognition would follow. But corporate America taught me a different lesson—one I had to learn the hard way.
I realized that if you don’t speak up about your accomplishments, they often go unnoticed. Worse, someone else might take credit for them. And what stung the most was realizing that my quiet confidence could be misinterpreted—not as professionalism, but as shyness or even a lack of assertiveness.
It took time to unlearn the idea that advocating for myself was somehow arrogant. Now, I make sure my contributions are seen and my voice is heard—not because I need validation, but because no one else will do it for me.
