Sometimes my face is loud

I have noticed I'm reaching the point where while in deep thought, my Date is loud without permission 😆😅 Anyone else?

2025/1/8 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so validating to hear others experience this! That feeling when your face just does something without your permission while you're deep in thought is such a classic ADHD moment. I totally get the 'POV: ADHD'ers - When you're in deep thought and accidentally make a face' vibe. It's like my brain is working overtime, and my face just can't keep up with the poker face facade! I've often wondered why this happens. For me, when I'm hyperfocusing on a task or even just lost in thought, my concentration goes so deep that my awareness of my body just... vanishes. It's like all my energy is channeled into my thoughts, leaving my facial muscles to just do whatever they want. Sometimes it's a furrowed brow of intense concentration, other times it's a little grimace if I'm working through a tricky problem. My partner has occasionally pointed out when I'm making a surprisingly expressive face, and I'm genuinely shocked because I had no idea! It's not something I'm consciously doing at all. This can be a bit awkward in social situations, especially if I'm trying to listen intently or process information. I'm there, trying to absorb every detail, and meanwhile, my face might be contorting into something that looks like confusion, disbelief, or even intense boredom – when in reality, I'm just deeply, deeply focused. It’s like a secret language my face speaks that I’m not privy to. I've had to explain to friends before, "Sorry if my face looks weird, I promise I'm listening super hard!" I think it ties into emotional dysregulation too, which is common with ADHD. Our emotions can run high, and sometimes those feelings just find an outlet through our expressions before we've even had a chance to process them internally. It's not just about deep thought, but sometimes even a sudden, intense feeling can just flash across my face without warning. If you're like me and your face has a mind of its own, here are a few things I've found helpful, or at least reassuring: Self-awareness, not self-critique: Instead of being embarrassed, I try to acknowledge it as part of my ADHD. It's not a flaw, just a characteristic. Gentle reminders: Sometimes, if I know I'm going into a situation where I need to be more aware of my expressions (like a serious meeting), I'll set a mental reminder to occasionally check in with my face muscles. It doesn't always work, but it helps a little. Humor is your friend: Honestly, laughing it off and explaining it to trusted friends or colleagues as "my ADHD face" has been the best approach. It normalizes it and allows for a shared chuckle. Body language cues: I also try to consciously use other body language (like leaning in, nodding) to show engagement, so even if my face is doing something quirky, my overall message is clear. Ultimately, it's just another one of those unique ADHD traits. It makes us who we are, even if it means our faces are a little "loud" sometimes! It's so comforting to know I'm not alone in this experience.

The thing I never say out loud is…
Because we all have something. A truth we carry in silence. A story that trembles under the surface. A feeling that’s too messy, too raw, too much to speak. But here’s the thing: Writing doesn’t need you to say it perfectly. It just needs you to be real. So set a timer for 15 minutes. W
