I’ve been visiting my parents for my birthday this week and whenever they visit I always make a fun baked good for them.
Made them this fall leaf inspired blueberry crumble. They liked it so much they requested I make another batch already.
* for this recipe I referenced the blueberry oatmeal bars recipe from the pastry and beyond website. However I cooked the blueberry filling down before adding it to the bars because I prefer the texture/flavor of it that way. I also used a different crumble recipe for the topping so the leaves would keep shape better.
I recently tried making a fall-themed blueberry crumble that not only tastes delicious but also captures the beauty of autumn with a leaf-shaped crumble topping. One trick I discovered is gently cooking down the blueberry filling before adding it to the base. This step intensifies the flavor and improves the texture, preventing the filling from being too watery and soggy. Another tip for achieving those gorgeous, defined leaf shapes on top is to use a crumble recipe with enough butter and flour to hold together well. Avoid over-mixing the crumble to maintain a crumbly texture that still sticks in shape when baked. I found that chilling the shaped crumble leaves for a few minutes before placing them on the filling helps them keep their form in the oven. If you're aiming to bring that fall aesthetic to your kitchen table, this recipe is a wonderful choice for birthdays, family visits, or cozy weekend treats. Pair it with a warm cup of spiced tea or coffee, and it makes a comforting seasonal dessert that everyone raves about. Plus, the process of crafting these little crumble leaves adds a fun and creative element to baking that anyone can enjoy. For those who want to customize, try mixing in a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg into the crumble topping or adding a squeeze of lemon juice to the blueberry filling for brightness. This recipe blends tradition with a playful, whimsical twist, perfect for celebrating the changing seasons with loved ones.
