I remember when I first began, I was primarily focused on physical gains, but soon realized that fitness is deeply connected with mental health. It’s crazy how challenges, whether physical or emotional, can shift your perspective about yourself and your capabilities. One of the toughest parts was overcoming moments when progress seemed to plateau or setbacks happened — what I like to call '立ち下がり', a Japanese phrase meaning to step back or fall behind temporarily. Embracing these moments, rather than feeling defeated, helped me build mental resilience. I learned that setbacks are just part of the growth process. In my experience, integrating mindfulness and mental health practices alongside physical exercise greatly enhanced my overall well-being. Regular workouts became outlets not only for improving my body but also for reducing stress and boosting my mood. I also found that tracking small wins, no matter how minor, kept me motivated. Sharing my journey on platforms like Lemon8 allows me to connect with others who are also balancing their health and mental wellness goals. If you’re starting your fitness path, remember it’s okay to have ups and downs. Life changes you, and the journey itself builds a stronger, healthier you in both body and mind.
