High functioning Anxiety ✨

📒Notes:

High-functioning anxiety is a term used to describe individuals who experience anxiety but are able to maintain a seemingly normal or high level of functioning in their daily lives. Despite outward success, those with high-functioning anxiety may struggle internally with persistent worry, perfectionism, and a fear of failure. It's essential to recognize and address such concerns to promote mental well-being.

... Read moreWhen I first heard the term 'high-functioning anxiety,' it was like a lightbulb went off. For years, I prided myself on being productive, organized, and always on top of things. My friends would describe me as 'outgoing' and 'hardworking,' but what they didn't see was the constant internal monologue, the endless to-do lists in my head, and the fear of failure that drove me. It felt like I was constantly juggling, terrified of dropping a ball. One of the big 'actual experiences' I deeply relate to is the people-pleasing and the intense fear of failure mentioned in that graphic. It's not just about wanting to do well; it's a deep-seated terror of disappointing others or not meeting impossibly high standards I set for myself. This often manifests as overthinking every interaction, replaying conversations, and constantly seeking validation. I'd find myself saying 'yes' to everything, even when I was utterly exhausted, just to maintain that image of being capable and reliable. The way someone with high-functioning anxiety sees the world is often through a lens of 'what if.' Every decision, every interaction, every potential task is analyzed for possible pitfalls. We might anticipate the worst-case scenario, constantly trying to prepare for it, which just fuels more worry. It's a relentless cycle that makes true relaxation feel almost impossible. You might appear calm and collected, but inside, your brain is running a marathon. For me, this meant having trouble sleeping because my mind wouldn't shut off, and constantly feeling a low hum of tension in my shoulders. Recognizing the 'signs of a breakdown' is crucial because, for us, it might not look like a typical collapse. Instead, it could be a gradual erosion of our coping mechanisms. For instance, I started noticing extreme irritability, snapping at loved ones over minor things, or feeling completely drained after a seemingly easy day. My perfectionism would skyrocket, making even simple tasks overwhelming, leading to procrastination. Eventually, I experienced intense physical fatigue and more frequent panic attacks, feeling utterly overwhelmed by responsibilities I once handled with ease. That's when I realized I couldn't just 'power through' anymore. Learning to manage this has been a journey. What really helped me was setting boundaries – learning to say 'no' without guilt. I also started practicing mindfulness to ground myself when my thoughts raced. It's about acknowledging that it's okay not to be 'on' all the time and that self-compassion is just as important as productivity. If you resonate with these 'hidden struggles,' please know you're not alone. Prioritizing your mental well-being isn't a sign of weakness; it's a sign of strength.
