I have been feeling like my house was starting to look like a thrift store. I have been trying to create a timeless farmhouse style cottage, but sometimes it becomes too much of something you love, and it started feeling chaotic instead of cozy. So I scaled back. I decided to purge a lot of the things that just felt too busy in the space and start creating rooms that feel more timeless, the kind that can shift with the seasons instead of being redone every time one changes.

This is one of those pieces I think will really carry through. It is not quite full fall yet, it is still end of summer, but it gives you that coziness of fall vibes without fully being fall. These stems can carry us through end of summer, into fall, and probably all the way to Christmas with these colors.

The vase they are sitting in I thrifted eight years ago at Goodwill. Everything on the shelf is thrifted too, and the table runner is from Dollar General for three dollars. Proof that you can create a home you love on a budget.

... Read moreIn my journey to create a timeless farmhouse cottage, I found that embracing simplicity and carefully selecting thrifted pieces truly made a difference. One key insight is to focus on versatile decor that can transition through seasons without overwhelming the space. For example, neutral tones combined with subtle pops of autumnal colors—like muted oranges and deep greens—offer warmth without committing fully to a holiday theme. Thrifting has become my favorite way to source unique items that add character without breaking the bank. I often visit local Goodwill stores and seasonal sales at places like Michaels for affordable table runners or accent pieces. Over the years, I've learned to look for quality items that blend well with the farmhouse aesthetic, such as rustic vases, weathered wood frames, and floral stems in earth tones. These pieces often tell a story and add personality to the home. Another tip is to declutter regularly, as having too many items—even ones you love—can make the space feel chaotic. I prioritize items that bring comfort and joy and remove those that feel too busy or out of place. This approach helps maintain a cozy, inviting atmosphere that adapts effortlessly from late summer to fall and all the way to Christmas. Lastly, mixing thrifted finds with inexpensive store-bought items can strike the perfect balance. For instance, a simple three-dollar table runner can complement thrifted decor beautifully, proving that creating a stylish, budget-friendly home is absolutely achievable. Overall, the key is to curate a collection of meaningful, versatile pieces that reflect your style and make your home feel timeless and welcoming throughout the year.
